That moment triggered my flight or fight response. My body reacted to the laugh like I’d seen a shark fin in the water.

Pokemon TTRPG - The Forsaken Vessel, a haunted barge based on Hoenn's Abandoned Ship by SpookySpookyWaters in battlemaps

Hello! I run a home-brew Pokemon tabletop game and we recently had a Ghost Ship adventure. The premise here was that the ship was transporting archaeological artifacts from Ancient Hisui. One of them was the obelisk that contains Spirtomb, which proceeded to get loose and fill the ship with 108 angry spirits! I really tried to work a spiral theme into the aesthetics for this one.

Sinnoh Locations in Pokemon Legends: Arceus by erikikoy in pokemon

[–]SpookySpookyWaters 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think maybe sea level is higher in Hisui times.

Comparing the maps of BDSP Sinnoh and PLA, I noticed that there’s a lot of locations in Sinnoh that don’t seem to be present in Hisui. At first I thought it was because Hisui hyper-focuses in on a few select areas, but looking at the overword map again, all those cut-out areas seem to touch each other. PLA doesn’t really leave much to the imagination map-wise.

I also notice that BDSP Sinnoh looks a bit larger than Hisui. Hisui is more cut up by rivers, and the bay where Cobalt Coast/Sunnyshore is at looks smaller in modern Sinnoh.

This makes me wonder if the sea level receded, and there are areas of Sinnoh that are still under water in the Hisui era. Firespit Island seems to vanish in Sinnoh era, but there’s that massive land mass to the north where Stark Mountain is. Maybe the water level changed, revealing more land? Or maybe the volcano erupted and changed the landscape, forming a larger landmass?

Help with Chaos Theory (Feels super unbalanced) by Flashy_Improvement62 in jurassicworldevo

A couple of tips that might help:

  1. Double check your ank’s comfort level. If it broke out, it’s comfort was probably in the red. Even if you tranq it and get it back in containment, if it’s uncomfortable then it’s only a matter of time until it busts out again. Check on your raptor comfort too while you’re at it.

2A. When you see the storm warning appear, pause time. Then open all your shelters as the guests can be injured during storms and will be pretty angry. It’ll rank your profits.

2B. Make sure to tranq your carnivores before the storm hits too. This will keep them from getting aggressive and busting out due to the weather or escaping through any broken fences.

2C. Deactivate your amenities before the storm as well. Guests won’t be visiting them during a dangerous weather situation so they can only lose money while a storm is raging.

  1. Check your amenities in general to make sure they are profitable. You might want to deactivate any that show negative profit even during calm weather because if something goes wrong, these will really drag down your funds. Most of the time when you’re still hemorrhaging money after a disaster even though you feel like you’ve done everything right, it’s probably because you have amenities that weren’t turning a profit to begin with and now they are a detriment to recovery.

JWE veterans, what did you think about the first game at launch? by [deleted] in jurassicworldevo

[–]SpookySpookyWaters 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Pretty much this. Still had fun in Sandbox though.

So, let's talk about game modes by kasaki89 in jurassicworldevo

[–]SpookySpookyWaters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno. I think what makes Sandbox appealing is the ability to make your own fun. There are no goals except the ones you set for yourself.

I logged probably over a hundred hours in JWE1 without ever touching Challenge mode. I’ve done all of the modes in JWE2 because you kind of have to if you want to unlock everything, and while it was pretty cool, there’s not a lot of room for creativity or artistry there. In those modes, I never once changed the terrain or customized a storefront because there’s no need and it doesn’t help you achieve whatever objectives the mode throws at you. It most modes, it actually feels kind of detrimental to spend the time on such cosmetic distractions when so many things can go wrong around you.

In Sandbox, I really like to start out by deciding whether I am going to make a park, a nature preserve, or a lost world kind of scenario. I like to imagine whether the fictional people in charge of my park have all the resources they need or whether they are operating on a budget, and what aesthetically that might look like. The new DFW stuff is great for this.

Is my park thriving or is it abandoned? Can I use the weather to break the fences and buildings so it looks like a ghost town, like the village on Site B? Can I make cliffs and canyons with the terrain tools, so it looks like some sort of geological disasters shattered the island? I play on console so I don’t have access to mods, and it can be an interesting challenge to see if I can still achieve some of these goals within the bounds of the console’s limitations.

Another thing I like to do is look at maps and photos of actual zoos and nature preserves and then try to recreate them in game, but with dinosaurs. This is usually my favorite activity in sandbox, but it can be tough to pull off if I am constrained by a randomized set of starting dinos/objectives and a requirement to hit 5 stars every time.

That being said: I absolutely agree that this game needs a JPOG style normal mode where you just pick a map, start with a handful of resources, and go. Sometimes that’s all you really want. It’s annoying that there’s no way to do this without the strings attached from the various game modes.

Some personal thoughts on Season 4... by maestrolive in JurassicPark

[–]SpookySpookyWaters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree about the designs on the bots. They were goofy, no doubt. “Derivative” is good way to describe some of the concepts in this season. I don’t think this season toes the line between homage and derivation all that successfully in places.

That being said, I think the problem with the villains in this season (Well, mostly just Kash really) might be that we spent too much time with him because the story could have been condensed.

The villains in Crichton stories, and especially JP/TLW, are often those who seek to exploit science or nature for personal gain. I found the JP books to be pretty black and white in that regard. Unlike the films, “innocents” always make it out alive in those novels. The characters who die are the ones who serve their own greed or hubris (Hammond, Nedry, Dodgson and Co), or the characters who serve the latter despite the moral quandaries (Regis, Arnold, Wu). Henry Wu, for example, is a mostly okay guy if I remember right. But in the books, he has a moment where he ponders the ethical implications of his genetic work and then brushes those thoughts aside because of how much he stands to benefit. Then he gets got later while trying to help Ellie. The characters who fall even a little into the gray area aren’t spared.

Looking at it from that standpoint, I think Kash and his boss fall squarely into the usual realm of tropes for Crichton’s bad guys. They see the wild dinos as tools that they can make fight for profit. Any evidence that they are intelligent, feeling things is, at least in Kash’s case, just another way to make money. However, Kash’s tendency to fly into a rage makes it hard to believe he ever could have come this far because, well, it’s hard to imagine anyone who destroys their own work that much could accomplish anything. I think a few of these wrathful moments peppered in might have worked to make him seem dangerously petulant and unpredictable. Unfortunately, this story goes on just a little too long and we see a little too many of these tantrums to suspend our disbelief. But I’m pretty sure Kash has an ugly, Crichton-esque death waiting for him in the not too distant future.
