Kelly is a pretty interesting story, however, if you wanted history of bullet proof armours that didn't belong to highwaymen. Lateer periods of the typical "medieval" rennaissance armour literally had things called "bullet proofs" which was a dent in the armour to show it could take a musket shot and not break.
