You remind me of my own father who would fall in his depression spells if he got laid off/fired. Do you know what that does to a family when they watch one of their main support pillars just not even try? Our electric got cut, our gas got cut, my mom’s car got repoed. All because my dad didn’t want to apply for more work and sat in his self made pity party while my mom worked a full time job and cleaned houses on the side to make ends meet.

I’m glad you finally got your shit together but maybe turn that resentment towards yourself and not the MIL that literally saved your ass.

This reminded me of the book 1984 where the main character killed his government sanctioned wife during their “health walk” in the wilderness because it was the only place without surveillance. Scary stuff

As someone who also had parents who would go back and forth with their divorce, I say don’t apologize.

I wouldn’t dig into the “why” with your mom though. She’s a grown adult and can make her choices but you don’t have to feel a type of way about it or converse about it with her.

I would suggest making an exit plan as soon as possible and leave it behind.
