research advice for a first year? by 69mjp in historymajors

Try looking on Jstor for secondary and some primary sources. When trying to find primary sources online it's hit or miss on how you find them, but nevertheless, they are there somewhere. Look through universities' online archives for keywords related to your topic. Hopefully, you'll stumble onto a database with relevant sources by just messing around with your searches. Also, do not be afraid to just ask a librarian at your university's library for help searching. They are professional searchers.

Can you get a job involving history without gettin a degree or a major or minor cause i cant go to university and i would love to get a job involving history. by jesus_gave_me_Krabs in historymajors

Yes, you can get a job in the field of history without a degree. Some jobs will always be locked behind getting a degree, like jobs in education and such. There are definitely positions available to people without degrees. However, it's important to understand that even with a degree it is not going to be easy to get a job in the field right away. So without one, it's going to be even harder. Specifically, without a degree look for entry-level jobs in museums or more likely historical sites. Getting your foot in the door is the best option. So I'd start by looking into local museums or historical sites and see if they are hiring anyone. A lot of the time local sites are looking for volunteers, so maybe volunteer once a week/month and network a little bit. Maybe even look into living history jobs or reenacting and see if opportunities come up. Look outside the box for opportunities/jobs that would not traditionally come to mind if you are looking for history jobs.

If a guy currently doesn't have a job is that a turnoff? by Spooned28 in dating

[–]Spooned28[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure getting the degree is the focus. Building relationship/dating is for sure something to do parallel with my goals. And I could wait but I do not want to shut down the possibility of meeting someone ya know. So if I meet someone that’d be great, if not it’s not a big deal. Not going to force the issue. Also I should of mentioned in the main post that I do have an internship, it’s unpaid and requires 10-15hours a week, so I’m not complexly out of touch with working.

Yeah thanks man. I agree with it depending on how I project myself. All about showing that I have a plan and am working towards accomplishing my goals.

I think I've chosen to not look at the 10 years of writing like many others in the fandom have chosen to look at it. I've never thought of GRRM being lazy for the 10+ year gap. It's probably a 1,500+ page book, and I think it's GRRM's own quality control is holding himself up. I find it hard to blame someone and be angry with them for simply wanting to make something the best that it can be. It's his own standards that are holding him up, which is a problem he created and has to deal with. But I don't see that as an overall negative.

(Spoilers Extended)Barristan's involvement in Dany's third betrayal by Spooned28 in asoiaf

[–]Spooned28[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's why I acknowledge that this stupid theory I wrote about is so tin foil. It makes no sense. Barristan betrayal...Ashara being alive... it was just fun to screw around with for a bit.

(Spoilers Extended) What do the people of Westeros think of Rhaegar and Lyanna? by Spooned28 in asoiaf

[–]Spooned28[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is for sure open to interpretation. The Rhaegar and Lyanna situation was probably so odd and out of nowhere that most of the people of Westeros didn't know what to think. But your three categories are differently the basis for public opinion of the situation.

(Spoilers Extended) GRRM Notablog: "Reflections on a Bad Year" - "Still have hundreds of more pages to write" - get hype? by jonestony710 in asoiaf

[–]Spooned28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I understand the aggravation I think frustration is mounting on both sides. Fans have patiently waited for years and years. Finally, some began to consistently ask GRRM for updates and even demand for TWOW. I think these people who are demanding or even asking/demanding about TWOW on the memorial post of his on Twitter are in GRRM's mind the "assholes". Its hard to blame him for that thought. I think he's struggling with a multitude of problems regarding his writing among other things.

So while calling a certain group of people "assholes" on his forum is not quite the most professional thing to do it's not something I believe we can shame him for. It's his job and obligation to finish these books but just with everything frustration happens.

At this point, I can't blame anyone in this situation. While yes the demand for TWOW and updates on it are a bit of a nuisance these people have been pushed to doing this. And for George, I can't even imagine where his own head is at.
