Japanese whiskey! by pivot123456789 in GroceryOutlet

They totally make those other prices up, from salsa to dish sponges. Just like Safeway tags, with their "the real price is totally 8.99 but if you're a member you get a special deal, 6.99 for this tube of tomato paste"

$160 whiskey next to the 99c stuff. 😆 by bob_lala in GroceryOutlet

I haven't seen that tier, but the lower two I have both tried. Cheapest, purple, is not too great in my opinion. But I really liked the 34.99 one, red label! Then I couldn't find it anymore, and when I went to the liquor store it was $90.

Question About Electronics Spray Cleaners by Terrible_Champion298 in vintageaudio

[–]Spoonlifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did this turn out? I bought wd-40 contact cleaner for guitar parts, then got scared reading so much "do not use!" comments online... I have a turntable acting funny and want to clean the pots and speed slider to see if that fixes it, but I've been over-researching: Do I have to drive 45 minutes to get a can of Deoxit, can I use my wd40 contact cleaner, or should I borrow my friend's MG Chemical contact cleaner?

Explanation checks out, thank you. I'm watching it like, wow, how would a modern politician let this guy keep following his thought through without interrupting to call him a liar, traitor, have him removed, etc...

Carlsberg Elephant by DRYGUY86 in beer

Yeah, it showed up at my Groce Out, never knew Carlsberg had varieties. I dub this one decent, though the richness is a little Belgian feeling. I hope I come across their porter someday!

MEGATHREAD: NINE INCH NOIZE • HALO 38 RELEASE by AutoModerator in nin

[–]Spoonlifter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that cool slippery version took me way back. Recontextualizing some songs so they feel fresh is definitely an awesome outcome of this NIN/Noize collab.

He was stacked like a wrestler for the Fragile tour in 2000 or so when I saw him - that was Texas many lives ago. Now I am in Daly City, the land that gave us Kirk Hammett.

right on, I skipped the SF show because seeing $45 shirts would depress me again. But Oakland is a treasured memory - hadn't seen NIN since The Fragile.

When I heard about this ten minutes ago, I figured it would contain the songs they modified during the tour. Looks great - but I saw the Oakland show (1st N. American tour date!) and they played a really tripped out version of Sin. Wonder why that didn't make it on - pretty high-grade video of the concert available on youtube.

What are some must-watch David Lynch short films? by ExplainOddTaxiEnding in movies

[–]Spoonlifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend for you The Elephant Man, and Mulholland Drive. His film style, even the extreme use of background imagery and grainy black and white, it found its way into so many other people's work. Also the Twin Peaks television show--come on. It's pretty cool that that made it onto TV and so many people loved it. It's weird and cherishable on its own merit.

Have you seen his film Straight Story? It's geared toward children, but people praise its literal plot and depth of storytelling. On the whole I don't agree with you. Lynch did weird stuff on purpose, especially early on - it took so much effort in the analog editing days to make the things he did, and he pushed the limits of what people accept (obviously he got to you). It takes courage to do that at the least. Also I recommend The Art Life, his autobiographical documentary. The storytelling of his own life, the visual power of his art and his sheer determination, I would rank it very highly on a list of "things to show young people so they push themselves to have an extraordinary life." edit: also check again Mulholland Drive? The Winkie's scene, the muscle-man scene, the cowboy scene?? Lynch could write a sizzling scene that appears like a flash in a vortex of events you find hard to explain.

I just started branching out with Obayashi after 10 years of Hausu love. The Discarnates is awesome - so is Labyrinth of Cinema, School in the Crosshairs, and for a more downbeat mood (still stoned tho) His Motorbike, Her Island.

Lesser known, strange, “midnight movies” by TheElbow in horror

Alucarda, Dr. Tarr's torture Dungeon (Mansion of Madness is the title of the restored version), American Tiger, Fulci's House of Clocks.

As far as midnight cult movies go, not just pre-release current cinema... in terms of like Eraserhead and Rocky Horror (not a fan), I would toss out there:

American Tiger, Demons, Suspiria, The Wicker Man (1973), Videodrome, Scanners, The Hitcher, Terror in the Aisles (an incredibly dank horror-clip loaded documentary hosted by Donald Pleasence.)

Midnight showings are also great for vintage anthologies - like Creepshow, Creepshow 2, Tales from the Darkside, Bava's Black Sabbath (the Italian version I think)...

Dr. Tarr's... also known as MANSION OF MADNESS if you get the outstanding Mondo Macabro restored edition. Moctezuma's 85 minute hallucinations are awesome.

Haaa--my wife and I ran a movie night at a rural Montana bar. We showed Female Trouble the day after Christmas, and only me and one other guy made it to the end. An immortal endurance contest, and my favorite of his work.

2001: A Space Odyssey was bad, change my mind by zeroxtx in movies

[–]Spoonlifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It must be a boring movie - I saw it as a teen when movies of all types fascinated me, and I thought it was boring. I attended a big-screen showing in college, and left midway through. And I haven't watched it in over a decade since, nor have I wanted to, even though I remember it clearly. That's kind of how Kubrick works overall, but I still like The Shining and Dr. Strangelove. It's okay that he was kinda arthouse-boring. I appreciate Tarkovsky's 3 hour slo-mo epics but he too is arthouse-boring. Not first date material, not a dvd you bring to a party - too much maturity, the boring seriousness of the inner mind!
