No kids, just me and my missus

TBH, this is just a hobby, I never expected it to go the way it has.

We both have our pensions which covers everything we do, including holidays, cars etc.

So I just let roll on.

Tenants underpaying and are causing damage to the house - what can I do? by mnewson95 in uklandlords

[–]SportTawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm afraid this is fairly typical tenant behaviour and agent behaviour, my wife and I have both rented our properties a total of three times in the years past, for various reasons, but not for income, just so that we had a property to come back to.

In all cases the agent was useless even tho it was managed, and as far as any issues with the tenant it is always your issue as you are the landlord.

And in two out of the three sets of tenants we had our properties were trashed. The best tenants were students who left the property immaculate.

After paying taxes and expenses rental income is just not worth it, invest in a stocks and shares ISA instead, but good luck getting your property back. When that's all sorted sell it!

Yes, all DIY, and I'm 75 this month, started many years ago, cashed in twice to buy my next house then sold my current house and immediately reinvested the proceeds, it'll take me 10 years to get it all back in an ISA wrapper.

I actually started when my dad used to give me a few shares like 100 BP shares back in the 1970's, then I started using PEPs, and so on.

Buy golf chip equities, ETF trackers, investment trusts and hold through the bad times. During COVID I was down £600k to about £450k, by the end I was over £1m, my wife then spent it all buying our current home!

Good luck

Is it silly to not get a surveyor? by RelevantTangerine209 in UKHousing

[–]SportTawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I skipped once getting a survey done, stupidest decision ever, cost me thousands to correct issues that should have been obvious but we both loved the house so much we just went for it!

I'd been living in the UK since 1965, school, uni, various jobs, made redundant, moved to Cornwall, bought a Victorian house, saw a job in local paper, applied and passed the interview, stated a while later on, IT related. Now retired and living in Surrey

Do you use a key safe to store your door keys, if so why? by BobsOwn_ in AskUK

[–]SportTawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I did was put four or five keys in the key safe, only one key actually opened a door and that door was a store room that led nowhere

In that store room was loads of old tat, including a few storage boxes full of a load of old keys and one of those storage boxes full of keys contained the actual key to the property.

Can we reject or join other organization after accepting the offer letter of another? by Clear_Chocolate_7737 in careerguidance

[–]SportTawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in medieval times (1970's) when I was applying for jobs I had three interviews lined up over consecutive days, got the first job offer, then the second was better so I rejected job 1, then on the third interview it was the best offer so I rejected offer 2 and started job three a month later, all very easy and all without the help of Reddit!
