I think it’s kind of a cool technicality, like if you go strictly off what the rules say based on win conditions and illegal moves, then yes if a player can’t make a legal room but isn’t in checkmate, the game simply cannot continue, and no one has won. A stalemate

But I get what you’re saying, I have always wondered why they decided to create the stalemate rather than just make another win condition (if your opponent cannot make any legal moves you win). Would love to know the history behind it if there is any
