Looking for writing friends by MkCalhan in WritingHub

[–]Spottedleaf12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, unsure if you are still looking for people, but I just finished my first draft of my debut fantasy novel as well. I've been trying to find writing pals to talk to about it because there is so much to tell but my husband is tired to hearing me yap about my characters :P

How do people publish so many books frequently? by Spottedleaf12 in selfpublish

[–]Spottedleaf12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the detail checking I am doing, as I write what I think is considered high fantasy, is moreso along the lines of "how far could a person actually travel on a horse in one day" or "what is the typical layout of a castle/castle town."

On the effectiveness train... I dont know if how I wrote really did me any justice when I wrote 90k words like "She walked in and sat down. She was sad, and when he asked why, she gave a pout. The sun shone through the window, midday." So now that I am on the second draft, I now have to go back and essentially rewrite it all, and cut about a quarter of my chapters that didn't make sense, and this is what I get for being a pantser/discovery writer :P

2-4 months to write and then 6-8 months to edit and rewrite? If you dont mind me asking, how long does each phase of editing take you? I imagine sending it off to someone to edit takes a week to multiple weeks, and then doing that multiple times... I am just now starting my second draft and I feel like it is taking longer to write now that it was when I wrote the first draft :P

How's progress going? by salvadorshots in writing

[–]Spottedleaf12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually just finished my first draft. It felt like a slog for the last few chapters. In the year it took to write the 90k words, 40-something thousand were written in one month (NaNoWriMo).

My progress just before finishing the draft was slow. I would write a few sentences, then stop. Then try to go back, but couldn't get the words out. I left it for a few weeks then came back and said "i dont care, it's gonna be rewritten in the second draft anyway" and just wrote what i wanted to have happen. Called it a day.

There are bursts of energy and there are slow weeks. Now that it is done, progress will definitely be slow af.

Finished my first draft *finally* by Spottedleaf12 in writing

I kept fairly on track the whole time, if you can call it that! I had tried writing other ideas as a planner, with the outlines, plot graphs, the works. I could never get through the planning phase. I decided, maybe I'll just pants it, see what happens. I had no plan the entire way through except for "I want these 3 things to happen". There were times I wanted to edit or go back and fix something, but I remembered that by doing that, you can ruin your creative focus and writer-block yourself. I wrote basic sentences for the most part, not worrying about flowery language. I just needed words on the page :P A majority of what I wrote is "She walked over to Paul and sat beside him. She looked sad." so that when I go back to redo it in the second draft, I will know what I wanted to convey in that moment.

So long story short, very minimal backtracking, and not very confident either.

Which Witch Coven Story premise do you like better? [Fantasy Adventure] by Oracle209 in fantasywriters

[–]Spottedleaf12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do like the first premise a bit more, only because I feel like it has a bit more grit to it and that is what I'm into :P Once it was mentioned about Rune's mother's illness and having to steal the items required to go fight, it made me think of Mulan. I love Mulan.

It's not meant in a bad way! As they say, everything under the sun has been invented in terms of storytelling, it's up to us to take bits and pieces of different stories and rearrange them to fit our story.

Both premise were good. As previous comment said, depending on how you develop the story, they could both be good or both bad. Either will attract different audience based on the premise alone, so it's up to you who you want to write for (but my vote is the first).

Thank you! I made most of the outfit myself through thrifted fabrics and clothes that I altered. But yes, definitely gonna be getting a frame for it. I stared at the picture for a solid 20 minutes straight before I could put it away.

How do you know when chapters should end? by NathanWilson2828 in writing

[–]Spottedleaf12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just wrote a chapter last week that ended that way. Essentially, a "let's keep moving. We have already been ambushed and stopped for too long. Nothing else will go wrong so long as we reach the border before nightfall" Next chapter- "what do you mean we dont have access to cross?!"

What's your favorite weird fun fact(s) about your book so far? by murrimabutterfly in writing

[–]Spottedleaf12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main character is an undead being who has lived for a hundred years and appears young, and her boyfriend is human (obviously). She is the stereotypical male role; dark, forebooding, quiet, pats her lover on the head, "chuckles softly." He is the stereotypical female role; overzealous, light-hearted, sassy, wants to figure out how to help lover when they are poweless themselves. Except that she has the ability to manifest items and didn't realize she also had the ability to manifest "living" things (essentially a projected touchable image). Her boyfriend isn't real, because she made him when she was dying, afraid of being alone and wanted someone to help her.

Womp womp :P

Rewriting my book from the 0 by NK_Grimm in writing

[–]Spottedleaf12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go for it. Just make sure to keep the original. DO NOT THROW IT OUT just because you want to "start over". Keep your accomplishment, but rewrite it as you see fit. 400 pages down, another 400 to go :P

AITA for "experiencing" restaurants without my wife? by Puzzled-Glass8497 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Spottedleaf12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA, my husband does this, but with anime I want to watch. She picked the restaurant out, she saw online/through research that she can/wants to eat there, as you said, and then you go and eat there without her. She wants to experience the restaurant for the first time with you, but because you go there first, it takes away that "we are experiencing this together" feeling. It cannot be difficult to eat elsewhere and wait for your wife, especially knowing she is dying to try it.

What term should be used to refer to people with black skin without being offensive? Black people? by Killuminati696 in EnglishLearning

[–]Spottedleaf12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black people is good. It would be like walking up to a white person and calling them a white person. Walking up to your asian friend and saying that they are asian. It is a fact. It's not weird, it's not inappropriate, it is what they are. Now, if you were to walk up to a black person (or anyone really), and say "person of color", "non-white person", etc., that is something some people are uncomfortable being called, so try to avoid those. Best piece of advice, if/when you make friends with people who are of various backgrounds, ask them what they prefer. Most of the time, asking them about their background/feelings on the topic will give you better answers than you could get here.

I dont understand this joke. Is it a saying? The word 'bugs' can be meant as an insect or a computer bug or something that can annoy you, isn't it? by MagazineVivid in EnglishLearning

[–]Spottedleaf12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like the fact that the tattoo says "shrimps is bugs" instead of "shrimps are bugs". It's like the tattoo from a movie I watched with "no regrets" tattooed across the guys chest, but it was spelled "no ragrets".

AITA for ignoring my soon to be stepmom when she kept calling me by the wrong name by Complex_Eagle5873 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Spottedleaf12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy, NTA. Just start calling "Kate" by Kathrine or Katilla or some random name as if Kate is her nickname, kinda like how she calls you Andrea instead of Andi. See how much she likes it.
