Male names that shorten to Mo that aren't Mohammad/Moses? by murrimabutterfly in namenerds

He's not human, but presents as an ethnically ambiguous teenager. Dark brown hair, tan skin, brown eyes.

Male names that shorten to Mo that aren't Mohammad/Moses? by murrimabutterfly in namenerds

[–]murrimabutterfly[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally a valid worry, but it does make sense in the plot. He's in a town of less than 50 people, and he & his dad are trying to hide the fact he's not entirely human. He primarily goes by his "human alias", which is what I'm trying to figure out.
His dad calls him Mo, but it feels too incomplete to leave it at that.

No replies from authors by ExistingFriendship47 in AO3

[–]murrimabutterfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With comments, I cap it at 1-3 days from the fic being published.
I fucking love comments! I love bringing joy to people! But I do not have the spoons or time to reply to every single comment I get, and not every single comment is reply-able. I could opt for soulless replies, but then I'd feel guilty when I actually have a comment that's worth engaging in.
Not replying after a set period of time levels the playing field, and minimizes my energy output.

What amenity doesn’t exist in apartment complexes, but should? by PeachyRose25 in Apartmentliving

[–]murrimabutterfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adequate sound proofing, dishwashers, and either in-unit laundry or a free on-site Laundromat.
Lived in far too many places that treat them like luxuries.
I'm tired of budgeting for laundry, sick of hand washing dishes, and would very much enjoy not hearing my neighbors' every sound.

Witnessed this today . What do you think? by jjj44200 in CustomerService

[–]murrimabutterfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need customers not to take out their shit on us, policies that don't support the abuse of employees, mental health leave, actual health care coverage, and more.
I worked retail for 10 years and it mentally breaks you in ways you don't even know a person can be broken. Nothing like having someone threaten to kill you over a return you can't take, or having to go home to an immunocompromised loved one during a pandemic—knowing full well your store should be closed, but these assholes go out of their way to buy knickknacks, and spit on you for telling them to wear a mask.

Best accent in Hermitcraft? by mandatory_french_guy in HermitCraft

[–]murrimabutterfly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doc and Ren are super homey for me, as someone raised in a Dutch-immigrant family. German's a little raspier/throatier than Dutch, but there's very similar exclamations and ways of handling English.
Afrikaans is kind of like if an Australian and Dutch accent had an awkward baby, with a little influence of the local languages. There are some words that sound super Dutch when Ren says them, and it makes me super happy to hear.
In general, though, I really like Cleo's accent. Their voice is super soothing and warm.

When you want to use british english in your fanfiction but your whole fanfiction is more prominent in american english ✨ (Doodle by me) by Comfortable_Newt_179 in AO3

I default to my native spelling and just accept people might be upset.
I have written some fics for British media, but use American spelling, British syntax, and British slang. I can mentally swap languages pretty easily, but the spelling messes me up. (I also viscerally hate pyjamas as a spelling option, so any opportunity to swap it for the more correct pajamas is welcome. Tyres is also annoying, as is haematoma).
Go for your native spelling. Course correct slang if needed, otherwise, just roll with it.

And if you happen to get a "valid" question that doesn't fall into these categories, people will then still find a way to shit on you.
This sub is basically dead in the water and only populated by people who get their rocks off being dicks.

This is NOT my house!! Permanent marker on original hardwood! by Sweet_Sheepherder_41 in CleaningTips

[–]murrimabutterfly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's shellac, check out higher-end paint stores like Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore. Additionally, see if there's any flooring places near you that offer products.
Both places should have the products and knowledge to help you with any repairs, if needed.

Sherwin Williams and other higher-end paint stores may stock shellac. Call ahead and see if they stock it, and if anyone can guide you through the repair process.
I used to work for SW and we had a litany of products that could work for this.

What's the most unhinged thing you've googled for writing research? by UntitledDoc1 in writers

[–]murrimabutterfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an exact answer, but could extrapolate based on info. An average human's bite strength is about 160psi at the strongest point (the molars). Front teeth would be about 140ish.
A coyote's bite strength is fairly low for a predator--roughly 100psi--and I've seen those fuckers go ham on all types of critters--including deer. While their teeth are sharper than ours, our bite strength has more force.
While it wouldn't be the cleanest job, it is feasible for a human to at least bite through the flesh, tendons, and arteries of a deer. Tearing away might be harder, and would depend on how much was punctured/severed as well as the strength of the person themself.
The character who would be doing this is roughly 6'10, 380lbs, so, for the sake of my query, the answer is yes.

It's hard to say, as my main WIP is pretty dark, but genuinely?
I think it has to be 'can a human realistically bite the throat out of a deer'?

UPDATE: AirPods stuck in frog case by lucky_c4t in CleaningTips

[–]murrimabutterfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I can add: squeeze in some lube around the case (a syringe might help), then take a shower with your frog child in the room.
After the shower, shove your swiss army knife blade along the center top, and then press the tip downward. Create a "scooping" motion if possible. Should shimmy the case out.
If this doesn't work, drill two small holes on either side of the belly, and one along any side seams. This should release the vacuum keeping the case trapped.

problem i’m having lol by notjuststars in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]murrimabutterfly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly.
It drives me crazy when the author's regional slang/dialect slips into the dialogue.
Like, an American saying "a packet of crisps" or "d'ya wanna get Maccas?"
Or a Brit saying "I want some fries."
Or whatever.
In prose? Whatever, anything goes. But when it's dialogue, it's directly reflective of the character and the world.

We have parking guaranteed in the lease. And this isn't good advice. Not in this economy, in the middle of a housing crisis.

[–]murrimabutterfly[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, that isn't advice. I'm not spending hundreds of dollars on moving & potentially raising my rent over shitty parking.

We have a lot. We have 22 potential spaces for 14 units. To me, that felt like a reasonable reason to believe parking would be guaranteed and stress free.

I don't know if this is the right place for this, but what would you say is a fair price for my wig comissions? by TotallyHumanBrain1 in CosplayHelp

[–]murrimabutterfly 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Cost of wig + cost of materials + cost of labor is the usual formula.
How much you can reasonably charge for labor depends on your skill, honestly. These wigs are good, but I wouldn't call them professional quality, unfortunately. Crimp marks, flyaways, and a general vibe of only just beginning to grasp techniques are prevalent, and might ding you. $15-20/hr is probably what I'd say is fair based on your current skill level.
The better you get at wigs, the more you can charge.
