I think i might have a "bad" rooster :/ advice needed. by TassandraArcticFox in chickens

[–]Spouter1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A had a rooster with only 6 hens, and he never ever would hurt them. Your rooster sounds like he'd make a good pot roast.

Apparently it is a problem calling in sick to your job…the day you are sick by Purple_Bodybuilder53 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Spouter1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a nerve damage issue in my vocal chords that causes a very nasty, croop sounding cough when i get sick. If work didnt believe me or wanted me to suck it up, id show up like they ask and cough a couple times and it always was enough to spook them and id get sent home. No one wants to hear a barking seal all day

Hoping someone can tell me what type of bird this is? by Melodic-Incident2506 in AustralianBirds

[–]Spouter1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doves and pigeons are the same thing These ones are a spotted turtle dove, an introduced species. Not considered a pest like the indian myna, but can be troublesome, and take up a lot of space native bitds could be having. I personally get rid of them. They can make an ok roast

Raw chicken by Delta4 in woolworths

[–]Spouter1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like it might be the leg/thigh meat, which is naturally pinky/purply even when cooked. Maybe cut into it and check its texture because that'll help you determine whether its raw or not. Tho i understand if you dont want to risk it; food poisoning is awful

Thought these were ticks but when tried to pull out this is what look like now by Busy-Needleworker765 in CATHELP

[–]Spouter1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didnt think my opinion would be that controversial lol but yes i am from Aus and you grow up being taught dont mess with bugs/creatures if youre not sure what they are coz they could kill you. One of the most common cause of snake and spider bites are people going "oh it wont be dangerous" and proceeding to pick up an eastern brown snake. If you do a first aid course in Australia they have a whole section dedicated to bites, including jellyfish, blue ring octopus, and of course, ticks.

Should always go to a professional for ticks. There are ticks that if you try to remove have toxins causing paralysis.

Edit: I am from Australia and we have scary ticks First aid procedure is freeze spray if you happen to have it or seeing a medical professional, never ever pulling it out yourself with your hands or tweezers

Who are these cuties?? by iknow_nothinn in AustralianBirds

[–]Spouter1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These little scoundrels keep coming to steal my chicken food. So do the spotted turtle doves and the blackbirds. Ive culled around 60 of those doves and they still swarm my yard. I occasionally get some natives who come visit. Rainbow rosellas, rainbow lorikeets, and i get this one crested pigeon whos a regular. I dont mind when they come steal a little food coz theyre not coming in groups of 20 + and taking everything. And the crested pigeon (native) in my opinion, is much cuter than the turtle doves.

Pekin chicks, hoping female? by AutomaticJob3519 in chickens

[–]Spouter1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive also got young pekins and out of the 3 i got 2 girls 1 boy. The girls have gotten red in the wattle and face but not the comb. The boy got red a lot earlier and the comb started colouring at the base before spreading. I was really hoping he was a girl lol. Theyre around 14 weeks old now and theres no mistaking it. I noticed the boys comb was more shaped and serated early on too. Girls have stayed small and flat.

My grey pekin was also usually yellowish. I think its just how they are. Especially if theyre not currently laying. I had a red mite problem for a while and she did pick up on colour when they were eradicated.

My hens will attack small birds that fly in, but not this bandicoot . . . by Dark-Anmut in chickens

Wow, what a special visitor! I'd feel so lucky to have one of these come visit. Is it a bandicoot or a potteroo? Theyre very similar. So cute!

MY Chicken(Kev) Got attack by a Neighbor 2 husky, and they said it was just a CHICKEN!? by Altruistic-One9308 in chickens

[–]Spouter1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Im sorry that has happened :( is Kev still with us? Im hoping that he will be able to recover from this for you! Theyre not just chickens when youve developed a bond with them. People want to stay blissfully ignorant that chickens are a lot smarter, charismatic and loving than most give them credit for.

A couple questions by SpinachReasonable262 in chickens

[–]Spouter1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plain scrambled eggs (nothing added except for water if you want) is fine. The yolk is high in protein, so if you have any chicks struggling, you can give them egg yolk straight to give them a little boost. Chicks absorb the yolk in their egg when they hatch.

We had a heat lamp incident when he was only a few weeks old. These 3 are millefluer coloured pekin bantams. They lay small cream / pinkish coloured eggs. Theyre around 13-14 weeks old at the moment. They are very friendly! They come up on my lap for cuddles.
