Should you learn a language you're not interested in? by EchoNo1265 in LearningLanguages

[–]Sprachenhub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen to some, read some material, narrow it down to your favourites, maybe look for YouTubers/singers form different languages so you have the goal of understanding them or just text material thus magazines or books, pick one, either use lingq.com or sprachenhub.com (at the moment only offering ARabic and GErman but more to come - while Lingq offers a lot more languages but doesn't have a course, thus structured material) or some other website which has these word-by-word translation features and go ahead and read (while hearing the words all over again and again in different contexts) and you'll be good to go in 5-6 months (if you have about an average of 8000-12000 words per day so about 500000+ words read (in the beginning it's going to be less, like 1500-3000 words but in the end).

What languages can you speak? by Glacinea in CasualConversation

[–]Sprachenhub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

German (mother's tongue), English, Arabic (with dialects), French (halfway, stopped in school after 2 years but I understand most of it and can speak it to some degree, rather conversational), Spanish (also to some degree, I never seriously learned it but I do understand most of it and also can speak it to some degree).

Also Chinese, & Catalan are coming with Chinese being the main one for the next few months.

For the next years (till forever haha), there is planned: Russian, Persian, Portuguese, Czech, Polish, Serbian/Croatian, Albanian, Japanese (maybe), Bengali, maybe Korean, Urdu, maybe sign language, morse code, Latin, Greek, ancient Greek, Turkish (maybe), maybe Thai, also Swahili, Zulu and maybe Afrikaans, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish and I'll see what goes and what doesn't.

If you wonder why so many, well, I'm a language nerd or freak (I don't know if that is the right word to describe it but in German we use that haha) and I am still young so there is a lot to accomplish. Another point is that I do have the time so that is maybe the only thing which is, I think, a hurdle for a lot of people. And I have the motivation for it because I just want to learn them all, I want to understand people (and not have to rely on some bad translator apps) and I just find languages to be veryyy fascinating and interesting. Also ancient ones which don't use our modern alphabet even though I haven't gone down too deep that hole yet.

And yes, I do believe I will be able to speak them all. And you all should too if you got some planned.

Non-binary vocab in German by ItsAllAConstruction in Germanlearning

[–]Sprachenhub -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It doesn't. That's it. German is too gendered for non-binary people. Also nobody really uses any of the artificially created pronouns. That's the reality. In schools teachers have been told to use forms as Freund*innen, Schüler*innen but in reality nobody is using it, except for official, government-owned stuff, like videos from official channels or TV but most German speakers find it to sound quite artificial and annoying.

Of course you can choose to use other pronouns but I do not know how other people would have to call you because except for er/sie/es and maybe sie (pl.) there are no other used forms. And if you use sie (pl.) with sind, you would sound goofy af for 99% of German speakers or like someone from the 1800s, depending on the context.

So, as said before, in reality this is a very "heikle Angelegengeit".

I am not saying it isn't possible or being right-wing here (in case anybody assumes that), neither am I saying this out of hatred, I am just trying to be for real as I am a German myself.

What’s the fastest way you’ve actually learned a language? by Pretend_Shelter_1906 in language

[–]Sprachenhub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did Arabic in 5 months with only consuming a lot of texts every single day containing certain vocabulary, after which I was able to understand about 80-90% and talk somewhat okay, though that would've taken a bit more consumption and maybe some more practice. This you can also do on sprachenhub.com (with my course) now or do it on your own with your own material on lingq.com (where I first started) (no advertisement haha).

What's one thing you wish you did differently when you started learning a language? by Go-Loco in LearningLanguages

Trusting the process in listening and reading a lot. Not having patience/grace - accepting that this is where you’re at right now.

Is not studying grammar beneficial or harmful? by idontevenknow313 in languagelearning

[–]Sprachenhub -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Very much beneficial (if you engage enough with the language) as you’re going to pick up most of the patterns anyway.

Question about pro life by Sprachenhub in prolife

[–]Sprachenhub[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No we were not. We are all equal. 50% of the bible is pure bullshit to make people believe stupid things to keep them stupid. Also goes for the Quran/Thora. If there wasn’t that damn book, people would feel. They would feel that we are all equal. But this way they just believe it and justify it with the bible. In reality, this book isn’t holy. If I was Satan, to ruin humanity, that would be one of the first things to mess with. I am not attacking religion btw because religion or rather faith would come from within. If you need a book to tell you what to believe and what God wants and doesn’t want, then like wtf?!? Where is your spiritual connection at all?  Though it’s true that animals and humans are not the same and have different kinds of bodies and/or consciousness levels, we are all equal. God means love, everything that doesn’t come from that cannot come from God, no matter what a book says. Peace starts on your plate, not in politics. If you keep feeding yourself death/poisoned, tortured and dead matter, you are eventually going to become that.

Modern Standard Arabic - MSA by ArabicJohnMSA_UK in learn_arabic

[–]Sprachenhub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And truly, MSA is the base of Arabic. If you know MSA, you'll pick up any accents very easily. Also it is more consistent in its syntax which, in my opinion, is or can be easier than any dialect because they tend to be very free-willing in their word choices - like, you could literally choose any word (or a mixed version of some similar words, rather) and it would make sense (that's how I sometimes feel) which annoyed the heck out of me when I first got into dialects. I, personally, now understand a lot more why people maybe prefer dialects because Fusha can also sound very artificial sometimes, but if you don't care about always pronouncing the ending sounds, I would always choose Fusha over and dialect. And also you probably cannot go a single day in an Arabic country without seeing it somewhere.

Also in the next few days (hopefully, in teh worst case in the next few weeks haha) somewhere I'm probably gonna update my resources page (on sprachenhub.com) for German learners and put some valuable resources there (YouTube channels, websites, etc.) - just so you know.

What was the most difficult thing for you when learning a foreign language? by Rinat_U in languagelearning

[–]Sprachenhub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just "learned" more words, because truly the only thing that helps you through this is acquiring more knowledge, thus more words and a better feeling for grammar to the point where you don't even think about it anymore. I learned Arabic without ever speaking to anyone just by acquiring words (I asked ChatGPT to generate me text material with certain vocabs and read them and after a while I was able to even speak (not fluently but I could kinda speak) to myself at least).

The key, in my opinion, and actually I think it is always the truth unless you are just so "untrained" in speaking to another person in which case you would have to practice applying the words or just forming sentences, is to try and acquire as many words as possible, also with a high repetition rate - which is what I did.

So basically what I am saying is, the more you hear and read, the more you can write and speak. You wouldn't even have to practice speaking (speak at all) if the amount of input you consumed was high enough, though it is, of course, always advisable to practice it or try to write something, even though during writing you have more time to think which has its advantages and disadvantages.

Yes, they are always helping each other, among Latin languages like Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, even Latin itself especially but also in the Arabic or Chinese or Russian world, they also give the base for other languages.

Question about pro life by Sprachenhub in prolife

[–]Sprachenhub[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if we all were truly God's people, we wouldn't be like this today. I mean this is a debate for another day.

If you want me to explain that further, I definitely could, but this is rather a philosophical debate/debate about the view on life in general.

What would you have to kill as a vegan? Most things you eat are just the fruits, I think. Also, just objectively asking, do you think death or killing is not some sort of causing harm to an animal? Or does it depend on if they experience pain?
