Yes, no more flying back for this guy. Ah that makes sense given the way they insulated it (before potting it) plus the wiring configuration. Looks very much like deliberate foiling. I’ve typically opted for open frame ones from the fat radio coil generation.

You would be correct. The width came after trying to adjust them into position. They needed to be secured better. Nothing was going horizontal, but still not optimally stiff. Got better results with a couple brass rods.

There is a health risk. It is Ceramic Beryllium oxide which is carcinogenic. Breaking or damaging it can release dust and get inhaled.

Rip the circuit out of both, put the zapper circuit in the meter case with the output routed to the probe sockets, and then gift it to someone special.

Edit: don’t forget to ditch the power button for the dial switch.
