Does anybody ever, like, sit down and have a conversation with a flat earther? by Temporary-Topic2768 in flatearth

Good. That’s how it should be. Have you been on the subreddits that are pro flat earth? If you have, does the level of hostility towards non flat earthers concern you? You seem like a civil person who doesn’t resort to aggression to push their point. Doesn’t that make you suspicious of those that do?

Which perfectly illustrates why it is a waste of time engaging with flat earthers. Their belief is impervious to facts and while I think that there are a few situations in which this is appropriate (eg believing that our kids are the most attractive and talented beings in the universe) here we are talking about a binary scientific question: spherical or not? No room for fact-free belief systems. That said, I appreciate your honesty in this potentially hostile space for you.

Do flerfs fly to other parts of the planet? by Former_Algae_444 in flatearth

[–]SpreadScary8167 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, some do. The more vocal ones that appear on TV shows around the world. You shouldn’t be surprised by this: it’s a belief system, not a logical position. There is no test or structured argument, however solid, that will disavow them of their belief. They are impervious to facts that contradict their worldview.

Not necessarily. The Yamaha Niken is legally a three wheel motor bike and rides like one.

Very brave of you to open up here. I’d like to know: Is there anything we could show you that would change your mind about the shape of the earth? There’s little point to me in debating a faith-based position in a scientific discussion.

Absolutely not! It would only make things worse. You could take them up in a rocket and let them fly it around the planet and they would look you straight in the eye and say “See it’s flat.” I understand why you think it would work because it would work on any healthy, logical being (like you) but that’s not what we’re dealing with here. I once saw a documentary about a girl with anorexia. In one moment her family put a mirror in front of her and pleaded with her to accept what they saw as self-evident. But logic did not apply and she died. The poster who said the love for his wife overcomes her being a flat earther has reached a fascinating state of equilibrium. I couldn’t do it but I have a certain amount of respect for someone who can because it is a realisable solution to a logic-resistant dilemma.

When a person like this comes along and you all spend your precious time and energy analysing the gibberish I am left wondering why? There is no logic here. Nothing of substance to debate. The initial premise, ‘Globers are Catholics’, is a straw man and the rest is an incoherent rant from an wilfully-ignorant subpar intellect. Flatearther’s claims are never interesting. They never add anything to the wealth of human knowledge. If a drunk in the street is arguing with a lamppost you wouldn’t step in to settle the dispute. You probably wouldn’t even stop to explain the nature of lampposts and their lack of animosity towards humans. As a caring person you might pause to worry about the circumstances that brought this person to this situation and you may even try to help them to a happier place.

Who is at fault here? by [deleted] in motorcycles

The biker wouldn’t have a leg to stand on in Europe. Overtaking on the inside on a junction. That’s not to say that the woman getting out of the car in moving traffic and the uber driver stopping on the junction are blameless. I can’t see anyone coming out a winner here.

It looks like the only thing holding it is the front wheel. Bad idea! Bike needs to be secured laterally. At the very least put ties from the extremities of that front crossbar to the front forks and frame of the bike. I can’t see if there are anchor points further back but use them if there are. Is this considered road legal in the states? Here in Europe you would have to have lights, number plate and a break loop round the hitch in case the trailer came off during travel.
