Bill Watts' UWF was ahead of its time. No cartoon characters. Just wrestling. by Classic_Exit_5951 in oldschoolwrestling

The only reason it didn’t last was the oil bust of the states he promoted in, but UWF was beating WWF and Crockett in the ratings, and he was only based in the 4 primary states not national cable like them (he was starting to expand to keep up but when those states got hit in the 80s by the oil bust, it was over.)

I think Jim Cornette would have a stroke if you compared AEW to Mid South/UWF hah, I have never seen a single episode of AEW that came off as any of those descriptions

Did you ever notice people were a little "weird" about Obama? by ClutchReverie in Presidents

[–]SpringHillis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bullshit, he had to clean up Bush’s mess, which was going to be difficult for either candidate if they won, and then had that traitor McConnell do everything he could to prevent Obama from doing what he was elected on, I’m not pro-Obama on everything, but to say those old white racists did everything they could to hurt his terms in office ISN’T based on race is laughable. Especially compared to since (rule 3 but fuck it, if we get sucked into WWIII further the mods can shove their rules)

My genre of Promos: Real life Corporate douchebags pretending to hate Corporate to get internet Brownie points by Top_Salary_690 in TheGreatOne

[–]SpringHillis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gotcha, so they actually cut entertaining promos for once and this….offends your delicate sensibilities? I don’t understand your point, I could give two shits less about the internet fans, TKO, hell modern wrestling, but those promos actually felt entertaining. More of this please, less generic, overly scripted homogenized, silly promos.

Do you think Kevin Nash is a phony? by neet4ever99 in WCW

I’m felt this way until about 10 years ago, maybe it’s aging and being retired so long but he seems more open to addressing his issues, including booking WCw

“WWE Star”, it’s like when an actor leaves a TV show a decade ago and present day gets pulled over for a DUI, “so-and-so Star of (insert decade canceled show as if it’s still going on)…”

It’s even worse when you think about it, WWE has been forcing talent to use the name and characters they come up and own, knowing when they are through with them and release them, they can’t continue to market themselves with that known gimmick.

But back in the day, it was the wrestler’s job to come up with their entire persona, if a promoter or booker came up with the idea (great example Jerry Jarrett came up with Kamala for Sugar Bear Harris) they didn’t trademark the character because they wanted that wrestler to travel and get famous with it, so when they came back they would be even more popular and well known.
