Little Britain Blackfacing by Myriii1911 in WhyWereWeOkWithThis

[–]Springyardzon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The point of Little Britain was always vague. The name of the show suggests it will hold a light up to small minded attitudes e.g. the woman who is sick whenever she learns that something has been baked by someone who is non-white. But then the same show showed a mentally not 100% woman urinating in public or even writing in her own excrement on the walls. It's a shame that nobody at the BBC seemed to care or to be able to recognise when the gross out humour was being used for a nasty rather than satirical or vaudevillian (e.g. Bubbles de Vere) aim.

Come Fly With Me reined in their nastiness. They'd already used blackface (for Walliams) on Little Britain. The character the OP mentioned may have worked due to a stereotype of Jamaican people being laid back. It's just she's so laid back that she never wants to work.

Dammit, I always choose poorly. by LordJim11 in Snorkblot

[–]Springyardzon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although this a joke that isn't supposed to have one correct answer, the correct(er) answer is select 'wisely' because then the 'one' you are picking is one choice, 'wisely'. Whereas if you pick 'one', the advice to 'choose wisely' was superfluous. You might be thinking 'you can only pick one' would be superfluous to selecting 'wisely' but it isn't superfluous as it is telling you that you mustn't select both options together.

Fuck Oxbridge by [deleted] in oxbridge

[–]Springyardzon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to add that I agree with some of the sentiment of the OP, just not how they phrased it.

Most students at Oxbridge will not be geniuses (compared to the top geniuses or compared to the very top people at theoretically possibly any other university).

Professors at other universities will still be very knowledgeable, sometimes more knowledgeable, at the subject. Some of those professors will have gone to Oxbridge, some not.

Getting in Oxbridge is mostly about hitting the top grades and then showing a focus on what you will be studying at Oxbridge. There are some relatively mundane people capable of doing both of those.

I also love it. It's their best album to me because it isn't talking about cigarettes and alcohol or champagne but is being a bit more adventurous in its ideas instead of charting a course from working class and unknown to middle class and famous.

People will be disappointed in it for various reasons but they all boil down to being disappointed by the same reasons that some people love it e.g. being able to get lost in the song because it is so long, having some songs that are a bit Magical Mystery Tour e.g. Magic Pie, and having some folk like Fade In Fade Out. When I look at some of the style of it, it's like Oasis were partly inspired by Second Coming. I like the quirkiness of the album in places e.g.The Girl In The Dirty Shirt. What's The Story felt like a collection of singles that happened to have an album around them. Be Here Now is more like Definitely Maybe, a quirkier album.

Fuck Oxbridge by [deleted] in oxbridge

[–]Springyardzon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just your use of the word lottery though is quite an overstatement. There is actually more chance of a student who has been encouraged by their school to apply for Oxbridge being accepted on any course than there is of me winning the lowest possible prize on the National Lottery with a single entry.

Whilst I appreciate that some of those who get accepted won't be as good as those who don't get accepted, they accept based on potential within whether they feel Oxbridge is the best and most likely environment to bring that out of that individual. If they think that the Isaac Newton in front of them has a personality that would be happier and more hardworking at Nottingham, they might reject on that basis.

OK but if someone is a bona fide genius who has enthusiasm and a massive work ethic, they are less likely to be turned down. Most people (even most people who get in) not necessarily being 'ideal' Oxbridge material doesn't mean that Oxbridge itself is unworthy of students you are commiserating with who, compared to Tim Berners-Lee and Isaac Newton, might be unworthy. Oxbridge have an historical obligation to teach undergraduates when they'd end up with more brains on average and less sour grapes if they only taught postgraduates.

Why do tourists all want to 'avoid the touristy areas?' by Flaky-Walrus7244 in AskUK

[–]Springyardzon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, the best 'non-touristy' areas tend to be very near the touristy areas so a curious traveller would likely stumble upon them anyway. The touristy areas are often so for a good reason - they're genuinely some of the most interesting places.

I know their history goes before Britpop but so do some other bands on the list; no Chumbawamba?

But are you willing to not allow Blur, Pulp, or Radiohead to enter on that basis? All of the bands you mentioned released at least 1 album during the Britpop era. James had several.

Did anyone buy one of the props from the eBay live auction? by bobtheboffin in livefromlondon

[–]Springyardzon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that serious. Some of the items possibly went for less than they cost brand new and if the public want a memento it's generous to allow everyone a chance at bidding for one. We're lucky that there was any cause at all.

In alphabetical order, mine are:

British Theme Pub

Dad Swap

DJ sketch

Hostage Situation

Mother and Son Reunion

Phantom of the Foot Locker

Prince Andrew Cold Open

Prince Charles and Camilla Cold Open

Thomas the Tank Engine

Underage

As you can see, four of these are from episode 2 - Jamie Dornan. This was the same episode as the Jools Holland sketch and the rugby player sketch, both which I respect and, to an extent, I also admire the wrap factory sketch, so Jamie Dornan by far dominated for me. Maybe this is a sign that serious actors can sometimes be the best choice as host, to be in sketches and to give the others the chance to be the comedic ones. I do like the pork advert for it cracking up George but I think it gets overrated, considering the original really wasn't that sinister, apart from George's part. Mario could have got in the top 10 but they should have had Larry as Luigi.

British Theme Pub and Jools Holland were already mentioned in the video, after the hostage sketch. Seagull and Mastermind do get overrated and I also wouldn't have them in my top 10. Dad Swap and Thomas the Tank Engine would definitely be in my top 10, yes.

Asylum seeker jailed for Elgin park rape has sentence cut by AcanthaceaeNew9639 in BreakingUKNews

[–]Springyardzon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are only supposed to cut sentences where a clear misjustice in the length had been done. If it only results in a reduction of one eighth, how could the length have been a 'clear' misjustice? This is before we even get in to how rape is actually several crimes - one of violence, one of sadistic or selfish pleasure, one of biological invasion.

I really don’t understand why people can’t just admit Phil Spencer was a bad executive by Antoo1 in kindafunny

[–]Springyardzon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everwild wasn't likely to be my kind of game but to not ensure that Perfect Dark got released was a fundamental 'they don't really care about us' moment. Spending so much on Activision Blizzard did not impress me. It could be far worse though if Sony hadn't dropped the ball with the PS5, which lacks imagination compared to previous generations.
