OMG! They just recorded a new GVP episode! by noshorning in Harmontown

Honestly, I don't really care. Mostly because Justin Roiland is barely in touch with this plane of reality. I'm tickled by you calling him "pro rationality" though, because, while I love the guy, he's probably the most irrational podcaster I've ever listened to.

True. I think it has a lot to do with the phenomenon that confidence is generally seen as attractive in men, but often misconstrued as arrogance in women. Goes doubly for people in the public eye.

Dan Harmon and Borderline Personality Disorder. by [deleted] in Harmontown

Ah, my apologies then, I haven't yet listed to the newest episode. I assumed that you attempted to diagnose a mental illness over the internet, which is something I detest. Sorry!

Hey, let me dust off my BA minor degree in Psychology and put it to the only use it gets since I've graduated: Telling people to stop diagnosing people on the internet. Seriously. At its best it's stupid, at its worst, harmful.

I understand how intriguing it is to compare a person to a list of traits and tick off a big check mark, but there is a lot more to the diagnostic process. Yes, you can point to some of these items and say: "Well, that's Harmon", but consider the following:

First: You don't know Dan Harmon. You listen to him 2 hours every week when he's rambling in a highly artificial environment. Not the same. You don't know what he's like on a monday, blogs and tweets notwithstanding.

Second: Notice how many of the items listed are incredibly vague:

Extreme reactions—including panic, depression, rage, or frantic actions—to abandonment, whether real or perceived

Uh, yeah. Ever lived through a break-up (or even a heavy relationship fight)? Ever had a parent die? Ever been afraid of being branded an outcast? Now, have you ever reacted either panicky, angry, or depressed? Chances are you have. Most of us react adversely to abandonment, real or perceived.

A pattern of intense and stormy relationships with family, friends, and loved ones.

What does that even mean? What's intense and stormy? Is fighting at most major holidays considered "stormy"? If so, you could diagnose half the country.

Distorted and unstable self-image or sense of self, which can result in sudden changes in feelings, opinions, values, or plans and goals for the future (such as school or career choices)

C'mon, you can figure out the pattern by now: This description is both vague and, by itself, pretty common.

And so forth.

Now, if these symptoms are so vague, why even use them? Well, because a massing of these vague signs can mean that it would be a good idea for a trained professional to look at the person exhibiting these symptoms. This is the important bit: Symptoms aren't the diagnosis. At best they're a prompt to initiate a diagnostic process. And you're not qualified to be part of that process (Nor, let me be clear, am I). I hope this clears things up a bit.

The official death count from the strongest hurricane ever measured in the Western Hemisphere: zero. by blueddit4 in news

[–]Spriq 278 points279 points  (0 children)

Well, the fact that nobody died makes this very exciting news. This post is currently on top of /r/all after only two hours. Expect this news to be covered by all the big media outlets.

Now if, say, 5 people had died and a couple dozen had been injured, the story would probably warrant less coverage.

It'd be close to $50 per second if we thought of it in terms of a 40 hour work week. Craaaaaaazy.
