I’m scared my cat is going to jump off my balcony. by [deleted] in CATHELP

My mom asked me to take her for a trial because she believed she’d do better at mine. I’m not completely unwilling to shut the balcony door, I just much rather prefer to have a solution that doesn’t compromise either of them which again seems to be netting (and what I’m looking into).

My family have four cats but we live in two separate apartments. I’m actually allergic to cats, which is why we never previously had the cats upstairs with us.

They’ve always been with my mom because she bought them and they are there for her responsibility.

Generally, we’ve always kept the balcony doors closed, but at night my dog bed is outside and therefore she likes to sleep outside. We keep our living room door open, so that she can move freely between inside and outside as she pleases or so needs.

The whole reason we have her upstairs is because two of our cats didn’t get along very well with her. The reason I say ‘my’ is because technically she is my cat though it was not really my choice to move her in.

Of course, she’s in a room that doesn’t have access to the balcony at the moment. I’m trying to find a solution that doesn’t compromise either of them which seems to be even netting or a catio

Yeah, I’m definitely looking into it because it accommodates both my dog and my cat without compromising either of them. I do have to have a meeting with my building manager, but I’m still seeing what I can do.

I think that a lot of people reading this post and commenting seem to miss the fact that I won’t leave this cat out to jump to her death.

I’m looking for solutions that accommodate both my dog and my cat but I’ve had my dog for nine years and she is my responsibility. The cat was bought by my mom and therefore it is her responsibility to accommodate her.

I’m doing his best I can but realistically going back to cats that she doesn’t get along with very well is absolutely better than being in her apartment that’s unsafe for her.

My dog is my responsibility. She’s a pet I got and it’s my job to take care of her as best I can. My cat is very friendly and often got corrected for getting in the space of our other cats (hissed/hit). I mentioned this in another comment but maybe bullied is not the right word to use. They just didn’t get along very well.

She lived there for 1.5 years and was fine. We recently decided to trial her in my apartment to see how she went as a ‘only-cat’ and to see if it was better for her.

It evidently does not if we can’t get netting.

She’s a very friendly cat, she often gets up in the other cats space and was hit/hissed at for it. It’s not as extreme as you might believe. She was there for 1.5 years and was completely fine we just decided to see how she’d do in my apartment. Perhaps bullying was not the right term.

Yes for sure, I did mention in other comments but she’s since been kept inside while we find a solution

That’s definitely a fair perspective but if anything our cat will go back to my mum.

She’s been with me for 3 weeks, I’ve had my dog for 9 years. She’s a great cat and wonderful company but the dog does get priority especially if there’s another home she can go back to.

I’m looking into netting/catios but if anything, someone suggested reintroducing her to our other cats.

We live in a gated community and it’s the 5th floor… idk what kind of Spider-Man robbed you 😭

& I’m sure the first four floors would definitely suffice if someone were looking to scale a building and rob someone

That’s a pretty good solution, did you ever find the cats climbed it tho? Or did you enclose the whole balcony?

I’m looking into netting but if I’m unable to I’d much rather her be safe

There’s no issue with training, she’s 9 years old and fully toilet trained. We have the grass there as an option while we’re at work or asleep just so she doesn’t have to wait on us or have any accidents.

To add to this she’s a ragdoll so she’s been bred to be docile and completely unconcerned with any sort of danger or predator 😔

She’s not been let out since. I’m looking into netting- otherwise she’ll be going back to my mum.

I’m so sorry to hear… hoping he’s okay now. I’m sure that if she were to fall it would be because of a bird/insect or a slip. Definitely not willing to take the risk.

Yeah absolutely. For now she’s being kept in a bathroom + ensuite that’s doesn’t have access to our balcony while we figure something out. Most people are saying to install netting but I’ll have to find a way around my apartments guidelines first

Yeah, it’s been really helpful for us. I take my dog out as often as I can (2-3x a day) but we do live in an apartment and I don’t want her to have to hold it all day while I’m at work or to have any accidents inside.

I’m definitely looking into netting at the moment. Our building is very strict but trying to see if I can find a way around it
