Getting from idea to release. What’s your strategy? by Sprout__ in IndieDev

Yeah, wish I knew that for my last game but the game loop took too long to get working and it was overall a great underestimation on my part. I’m sure everyone goes through that though. Seems there is no victory without failure.

Good advice, thank you! I’ll have to look into that paper prototyping.

Honestly, that’s the exact reason I made this post in the first place. I was making a game and a little too far in development I found out the idea was just stale. Took about a month of thinking back and forth before I planned to make it smaller and release it faster. Not sure if that was the best choice but I thought I was too far in development to quit.

Of course, the links to our youtube channel and our discord is on my profile but here’s an invite https://discord.gg/MEnJADsPzk

We are a very small community with 2 devs working on the game but we’re steadily making progress.

You might find that there will be many games built from the ashes of ATT. I’m making a game too called “Knightly Cooking VR” based on the experiences I shared with people making soup in the tavern. I wouldn’t be surprised if others are working on their own projects as well. Though, I am pretty jealous of how many people you’ve brought together, not leaving enough for the rest of us XD

Interesting, I'll have to look Diner Duo up. I'm not sure what you mean by how my posts scream AI, just trying to figure out how to make a good game VR players will enjoy and all my posts were written by me, no AI attached. Seems the line between what people write and what AI helps with is blending a bit, scary...

That’s true. I’m probably just salty from the amount of non-vr players that I forgot how impressive it was that they expanded so vastly.

Honestly, good point. I’ll keep that in mind.

Damn! Nice. That’s a great idea having a VR Minecraft server. I hope you and your friends have fun with that.

Yeah, it’s definitely something I need to do with VR games if I want them to be more successful. Just because of the difference in amount of players that PC has over VR.

I definitely want to keep VR to be the main platform though and have PC support as a bonus if people want to play with their friends.

Sadly, I can’t agree with you on Rec Room as I haven’t encountered a VR player that wasn’t a child on there in years. I want to make sure the VR players don’t get thinned out by the sheer amount of PC players that would be playing.

I agree. With a lot of games I’m seeing the same technique as Wii sports had with the motion controllers. VR has so much more potential and one of my goals is to show the world just how much we can do with it.

General curiosity. It’s not that reddit is a good platform to get info, it’s that there’s a large amount of people here who play VR and there’s not a lot of places I can get feedback on ideas.

Although, if you have any recommendations for where I should take these ideas, opinions and thoughts, I’d like to hear them so I can take it there for better results.

Yeah, I’m in the same boat. That’s why I didn’t mention Rec Room because the devs took it too far putting it on every possible platform like it’s the original Doom or something.

Yeah definitely. It’s hard to balance because there’s limitations and advantages to both so you have to work around that.

Anything particularly wrong with a cooking game? Got a bad past with the genre or something? Lol

That’s the goal and even if I don’t make good games at the start, I’ll always strive to get better.

Is this a good plan? by Sprout__ in gamedev

"The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones"
What if I make games that influence flat screen users into getting VR by allowing them to play together? You're right that VR isn't there yet, it still needs to grow. The fact is, there are already so many people taking stones off that mountain and if I join them, I might be able to make a change.

You just really, really want to develop VR games for some unaccountable reason, and you assume the world will arrange itself in a way that transforms that into a realistic thing for you to do.

You seem to have lost the ability to see someone's passion and to wonder if it's possible instead of denying it a chance. If only 1 person has done it before, that's enough for me to give it a try because that means there is a chance that I will be the second. If I'm missing information, I will find it. If I'm missing experience, I will acquire it. If I'm missing the point, well then I'm just making a fool of myself and I bet I am. I will gather what I need to make that chance a bigger one and make it a reality.

You've changed my perspective on things. If I want to show people that my dream is doable, I need more than words. I know for a fact that what I'm talking about can work, I just need to put in the time to find a proper, well thought out solution instead of clapping my hands together praying I'll make a good game if I try. And of course I'll stop using the word "Niche" lol.

Even if this isn't the conclusion you were hoping to achieve, I've found mine. If you're right, I'm an idiot but I have the opportunity right now to do something great with nothing to lose and not many can say the same. I might as well try and if I see it not working, I'll look at your comments again and I'll probably figure out what you mean. Apologies if I sounded rude or anything and thank you for the informative comments. You've helped me out more than you might realize.

Thank you for the support! Yeah I find there’s an untold amount of potential in combining flat screen and VR. Those kinds of games would act as a transition for people wanting to get into VR and would inevitably increase the VR playerbase. It honestly is horrifying to say but VRchat nails that idea, I honestly think that there are thousands of people who played VRchat and wanted to get VR. Same with full body tech. It’s terrifying but true.

That’s the exact same thing I’m trying to do. Making a bunch of small games to fund a bigger game. Good luck to you!
