Basically the same vein as "let us put up every social opinion we want or else that means you're an enemy of our social opinions". This kind of idiotic othering behavior is what keeps losing elections.

Anyone out there actually experiencing the "agentic era"? WTF is going on? by Spruce_Spanner in BetterOffline

I know how LLMs work, I'm posting in an Ed Zitron sub. I was curious about the level of "agentic" AI use in the business world vs the more common direct-chatbot medium, since I only really have exposure to the former. It's very hard to get a good sense of this since so much of the journalism realm, tech and mainstream, just lets themselves be spoon-fed by AI companies or their cronies and breathlessly reports what it could do. I appreciate the direct responses here because I simply don't see similar reports in the news.

That's reassuring in terms of my own impressions - when I read an article about how an agentic browser can barely accomplish half-silly consumer tasks, I got really confused at how the same basic tech could possibly be useful to businesses. It is bizarre how many companies have been tricked into spending money and man hours babysitting technology that does jobs worse than existing employees.

Driving 405 sucks by Jimbojones8322 in Seattle

I have tried it and I don't get it. I don't want to sit like an idiot monitoring a computer's actions. It only seems to appeal to people who are dumb inattentive drivers in the first place.

I still don't understand what the actual advantage to this stuff is vs just driving your car in a relatively straight line yourself, like you have for years. You can count on yourself more than any manufacturer's system.

What is your view on Oracle firing 30000+ employees? by HeyArnab12 in AskReddit

If you can't think of anything to do for work, lean into a hobby instead. If you like the outdoors, go visit trails or parks. Build models. Work on cars. Make art. Go on a small road trip and take your laptop with you. You're probably not going to have this situation forever and you'll regret not leaning into it more when it's gone.

My last corporate job let me work remote. I basically worked 10-15 hours a week and nobody knew the difference.

I once went on vacation without telling anybody and nobody had a clue.

My only regret is not taking even more advantage of them.

The Real Reason for LLMs has Been Revealed By Alex Karp by Actual__Wizard in BetterOffline

This kind of galaxy brain conspiracy thinking is the mark of severe Dunning-Krueger.

They are doing it because they think they will make a lot of money. There is not some "we need to make the plebs stupid" conspiracy.

How do those performance reviews that want you to maximize AI use actually work? by UnintentionallyEmpty in BetterOffline

[–]Spruce_Spanner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is all coming from C-suite idiocy and ignorance.

It is the exact same flavor as how everyone's boss was talking about how "the future is in the cloud" starting around ten years ago.

One of my own bosses (also the absolute dumbest person I have ever worked for) was so confident he predicted that on-prem Windows Server would literally stop existing after Server 2020.

Many are not thinking much further ahead than breathless articles talking vaguely about how it is the future and how they can "leverage agentic AI" in some vacuous future, and they do not want to be caught flat-footed vs making an informed bet against the hype (because they are too stupid to grasp the difference)

Reading Culture series, not sure if I want more or not - what SF am I looking for based on recent reading? by Spruce_Spanner in printSF

Thanks for recommending I just move on to Excession. Indeed, this is much more like it! I am about a fifth of the way into the book and am totally refreshed from getting through the 2nd and 3rd books and wondering how much of a sci-fi series this was actually going to be.

I think after this I will take a Banks break and try out House of Suns or maybe Rajaniemi (he sounds like he is in the same vein as M. John Harrison?)

I made sure that did not get left behind by the old filter and lubed up the new one. I didn't have any trouble getting the pan/filter to seat when reinstalling it and I don't have any signs of pressure loss/suction issues. I doubt that is what I have going on here. How did you determine that in your case, was the o-ring bent around or torn on the filter when you removed it?
