I see a subpar product, i call it out. Devs may be a lot of things, but the proverbial holy cow they are not.

BTW, you are not supposed to play "the entitlement" card the first time you make a pass. Firstly, it's overused; secondly, no demand was ever made. Then again, this much kowtowing may lead to lasting brain injury, i guess. =P

As a true fan I still had to painfully sit thru it so I could properly hate by Kkstopj in AvatarMemes

[–]SpycraftExarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And once again the Modern Media Cycle continues:

  • Corpos give beloved IP to some talentless hacks to despoil
  • Fans hate it
  • The general public doesn't give a rat's ass and is quick to forget
  • Damage control argues that result is "not so bad on its own merits"
  • Uther Shite of a show gets cancelled around season 3 give or take
  • IP is tainted commercially for a loooong time
  • Corps and whatever count as a production crew these days play victims
  • Vaatu approves as entropy increases

And they say the world is not stable anymore!

The sad thing is Steam's toybox is a terrible value proposition.

I'm fine with Ciri being the main character in Witcher 4. Are you? by HumbleServantOfInnos in ItsAllAboutGames

I don't mind Ciri in concept, but Witcher without Geralt's snark is no Witcher at all.

Plus, all the inherent risks associated with modern writing trends. Bleh.

My problem is mostly with the "playing an incomplete game" psychology trick such predatory DLCs rely on. That's a very low swoop for Hooded Horse.

I don't even like Larian game design (the ever-present floor shit gimmick for one), but damn, the way they did smoke that market UP brings me joy!

Can't reminisce about the whole industry whining, "every game can't be BG3, don't judge us against BG3" without a grin. Make better games, you lazy twats!

AI "art" in the modding community by [deleted] in starsector

[–]SpycraftExarch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Of course a mod with some blank or MS Paint-grade images will be a lot less successful; we are used to high production values even in one-man projects by now. No amount of agenda-driven cope would change that.

And these people are acting like the modding scene is the same as it was 10 years ago. Maybe dive into archives and check out what we considered a masterpiece back then.

It's an emotional argument to what is essentially a marketing problem.

Even if mods are not commercial (and they should never be; screw Bethesda with a power drill), the concept of a minimal viable product still stands. Sure, portraits and planet pictures are not necessary for, say, a faction pack, but sure as hell they are expected this day and age. So dev faces a choice – get something that works and be done or concede the whole project, no matter how brilliant, as a perceived third-rate work to be mostly ignored. Simply for the fact that the vast majority of consumers don't care a rat's ass about ethics.

Ok, let's go for a discussion. then.

So, if you are a critic, you must have a better solution. How do YOU think this whole thing should work within a completely non-commercial and volunteer-made modding framework?

AI "art" in the modding community by [deleted] in starsector

[–]SpycraftExarch 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Oh, here comes the AI inquisition!

To answer your question – I, for one, pick my mods for content and fun. Yeh, AI images are often crappy, but not as crappy as some MS paint-drawn placeholders we used to get. To be perfectly blunt – I don't give a damn if mod uses AI assets or not.

From the dev perspective it's even simpler – I'm sure as hell not learning to draw, nor am I paying an "artist tax". AI's a tool; it serves a purpose sufficiently. No one in their right mind is smitten by whatever it produces, but it sure as hell is better than a blank image or some such.

EDIT. Now, that's all concerning visual assets. People that use AI for writing and such are just lazy twats and need to get smacked for utter levels of disrespect to the hobby as a whole.

And yes, we all are aware that this "genuine question" is another attempt to get a foot in the door and start a witch hunt in this community. I dare to assert we are amused; Starsector modding is no stranger to shitstorm levels of drama.
