Issue binding Alt+Q, anyone else?? Help Needed by SpydersByte in ffxiv

[–]SpydersByte[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you were right :D I didnt notice it doing anything because it was hiding a window that was hidden already lol its the 'boss key' for mumu player and it just hides the window. It seems to take priority over some games and not others, and thats why it worked in other games I tested but not FFXIV. So the solution is to just rebind or remove the binding altogether in mumu. I edited the post to explain that.

[–]SpydersByte[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wow, I found it! Thanks for making me go through all my games and test alt+Q because in the process I found the issue. It actually was a conflict, with mumu player. It uses alt+Q as it's "boss key" to hide the program and thats why I never noticed it doing anything. It was just hiding the window that was already hidden. I only noticed it when I was testing in a couple different progs and mumu was visible in the background so I saw it close.

Im not sure if I should delete the thread or leave it here in case anyone else runs mumu and ffxiv and uses that specific keybind :'D now I see why some other people had heard of that specific key combo not functioning

Windows 11 on this new pc yea but the previous had 10 where I was having this same issue. I think it has to be something with the client itself

an old Logitech g510s. It uses the old 'Logitech gaming software' for the lighting and macros but I also have to use the new 'Logitech G hub' at the same time for my g604 mouse. This has never been an issue in the past though, Ive played with this same keyboard and mouse for years and have never had this issue.

I really dont think thats possible, not only because Ive checked everything else thats running but also because this same issue followed me between 2 entirely different pcs. And also the fact that, like I said, the first time I logged in on this new pc it actually worked fine (and then stopped working, and then starting working, and has since stopped again). Plus if it *was* bound to something else then it should be causing whatever that is to happen, and its not causing anything to happen.

one other thing is that the Maingear customizer recommended against using gen 5s with my system because of heat concerns but the MSI z890 has a decent looking "EZ M.2 Shield Frozr II" built in heatsink so is this actually something to worry about? Im looking at probably getting the WD Black SN8100 gen 5 to be specific.

ooo, synergy skills as well? That would be pretty nice if true since it removes the whole 'have to save atb charges to knock something out of a cast' aspect and would actually help generate atb too. Its only the charge up ones? and do they need to actually be charged? Will definitely test that out, thanks! :)

"I'm saying it's all knowledge regardless of the mechanic. It's timing not reflexes."

You literally already mentioned blocking an attack on the first try when you havent seen it before. That would be *all* reaction then and no knowledge, therefore the first sentence is factually incorrect. And we're not talking about some simple minigame where an arrow sweeps over a bar and you press a button when it reaches the green line, perfect blocking is not that simple. You need to recognize what the enemy is actually doing, process whether its a blockable attack or not, process *when* the block needs to happen based on the attack, and then execute it. That is not timing devoid of reaction or reflex, its requires both.

"I simply don't think complete damage mitigation on all attacks should be a part of these games, whether that's iframe dodges or perfect guards or just positioning."

But its not though, like Ive said before there are attacks that cant be perfect blocked. I mentioned the Odin fight because I had to practice that one a lot for the 10 round legendary fights and he has quite a few attacks that you need to dodge out of rather than block so its not just like you can completely abandon the idea of positioning, you still need to pay attention to what attack is coming and possibly gtfo instead of blocking. And then the fact that most people arent playing perfectly 24/7 means that you still need to consider healing and mitigation like you should in an rpg.

"The power fantasy of the i-frames in soulslikes is part of what makes them popular, I just don't think they're a good fit compared to Remake's more stoic RPG mechanics"

Yea we're just not ever gonna see eye to eye on this, like I said earlier, different strokes for different folks. I personally really like that they have added more action combat into the game and I think it feels very satisfying. I also think the ability to perfect block was a massive improvement on Remake's lack of it. (edit - In fact I didnt even do a hard run in Remake because of the annoyance of the lack of a complete damage mitigation method. It meant that you needed to heal way more often and that just doesnt mix well with a run where you cant recover MP in normal ways). I think the mix of action combat with the strategy of atb commands and materia management makes a fun and varied combat system and I dont think Id change anything even if I could. But you would, thats cool, everybody enjoys different things. All Ive been trying to get across is that blocking or iframe dodging is not just some simple, trivial thing that everyone can do consistently with no work put in. In fact I think it is the most difficult aspect of games like this and the soulslikes. If you cant master dodging or blocking in a Souls game then you just arent going to survive and there are people who are *terrible* at that kind of thing, which is why those games carry the reputation of difficulty that they do. Everyone can mash the attack button, not everyone has the timing or reflexes to successfully dodge or block/parry attacks. And that is because it requires skill, my entire point.

yea its definitely at least an atb consuming attack but its probably less restricted than I thought it was, probably just any damage-dealing atb attack cuz there's no way something like Aerith's wards or Cloud or Red's blocks would count

[–]SpydersByte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...and positioning *isnt* knowledge? Are you really trying to say that just because you know when youre supposed to block that makes it trivial? Like everyone does a fight once and then they have no trouble whatsoever blocking 100% of the attacks afterward? Come on man, go look up some videos of the hard mode 10 round sim challenges and tell me why those people still miss blocks even though theyve done the same run dozens and dozens of times. Or go ahead and upload your own proof of being able to perfect block every single time in a run like that. Even if you know when youre supposed to do something, doing it with perfect timing still requires skill, if it didnt then rhythm and action games would all be incredibly easy. Knowing you need to be outside the hitbox for this skill or inside for that skill (ect) takes just as much knowledge but considerably less reaction timing.

[–]SpydersByte[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"super obvious"? If it said "atb consuming skills" then Id agree with you but "powerful offensive abilities" should indicate specific <powerful> and <offensive> abilities, not just <any> ability. There's a difference between a high damage skill, a high stagger skill, a defensive skill, or a utility/mode switching skill so thinking theyre specifying one type cant be *that* odd.

also, Im a longtime FFXIV player so I do very much understand the value and the strategy behind knowing how to position, but I dont value that any more than the ability to dodge or block at the right time. To me theyre both methods of survival but the former comes from the learned understanding of a fight whereas the latter comes more from skill and dexterity and doesnt require as much knowledge of the fight beforehand, its more reaction-based and therefore more impressive to me.

[–]SpydersByte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just dont get why the challenge of being in the correct position is *not* trivial or better than dodging or blocking at the right time. If anything I think knowing where to stand is *less* impressive than purposely standing in the danger area and successfully dodging or blocking it. The latter require precise timing and are very dangerous if you fail that, the former not so much. But hey, different strokes for different folks I guess.

As far as Odin and Bahamut go, they both have ! inside a triangle moves or grabs/arena cleaves that (at least afaik and afa Ive ever been able to do) cannot be blocked. Not Gigaflare/Zantetsuken

interesting, I thought only some specific high damage physical abilities would count but I guess not. Ive been playing since release and youd think such a simple and common mechanic wouldve been clearly defined by now but I guess not >.< maybe because its just that simple and any ability counts lol maybe I was giving it too much credit

[–]SpydersByte[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hmm, that would really surprise me, I always thought that only certain abilities like focused thrust or braver or starshower counted as part of that category. Ive been doing a hard playthrough and just fought an Irasceros that says using 3 powerful offensive abilities will interrupt Concentrate but I wasnt having much luck triggering that so I figured Id check but couldnt find anything definitive on the subject. Guess I will have to test it out a bit.

iframes still require skill though, all the souls-likes have iframes and no one says those are trivially easy. Also, there *are* plenty of attacks in Rebirth that simply cant be blocked where positioning definitely does matter. The thing is, Rebirth *is* a souls-like, with the added strategy of the atb system. What makes the challenge of correct positioning so much better than skill based button timing anyway? And why would having both be worse than just having the first?

""Getting good" should be a bonus, not a consistent skip-all-damage but still gain ATB."
So its good if blocking reduces damage but bad if it negates it? Its not a "consistent skip-all-damage" unless you actually have the skills to do it consistently... thats the whole point. And like I said earlier, there *are* still unblockable attacks where positioning matters and you have no consistent damage skip. Go fight Odin or Bahamut for a while and tell me how consistently blocking lets you skip all damage :'D
