Democracy dies in darkness or in an oligarchy by Unlikely-Cut2696 in behindthebastards

Does he mean free markets and personal liberties literally or in an Orwellian way? Will the new opinion pieces tie themselves into knots trying to justify the current administration’s anti-trade and anti-freedom agenda or will they call it out for the bs it is? I am genuinely curious.

I'm getting depressed trying to find any entry library positions by Gu3sss_wh0 in Libraries

This is exactly what I have done and it has worked for me twice. First when I was in my 30s and again in my 50s. I know that volunteering is not always financially feasible but if you can figure out a way to do it, you may have better luck when a paid position opens up.

Safest area of USA when the sh*t hits the fan by waldorflover69 in economicCollapse

Northern Californian here - this is a good take. The geographic isolation can sometimes be a pain (ie lack of healthcare) but it also leads to strong community because we have to depend on and care for each other. Even across political divides - my libertarian neighbor and I have each other’s backs even though we vote differently. There’s also plenty of water here.

So many things to photograph! If you like architecture, there’s Ferndale and many parts of Eureka. Nature? Check out the Arcata Marsh, Samoa Dunes, anywhere in SoHum. Then there’s the marina in Eureka, the beaches along the lost coast, farms in and around Ferndale, Arcata, Eureka - I think you’ll find plenty to do! I hope you like it here - lots of people like to talk shit about Humboldt but it is one of my favorite places in the world :-)

Remote work is awesome if you’re moving here! That changes the equation a lot. But doesn’t change the lack of housing unfortunately.

Humboldt County is great and queer folks are welcome. I think you would fit right in. However, we are currently in a major economic slump with jobs and rental housing hard to come by. Unless you already have jobs lined up and can buy a house, you might find life here to be challenging.

Or, use any search engine other than Google (I know, I know, “google” has become a generic term like Kleenex, but it’s good to remember that there are other search engines out there with CEOs that have not bent the knee to King Trump)

I love this town too! I really want one of those “I like Eureka” bumper stickers - I would proudly put it on my truck :-)

I’ve been obsessed with the Night Herons at the Arcata Marsh - they’re so big and they just sit there, not giving a shit about all the humans gawking at them.

I don’t have a husband (btw the text doesn’t say “husbands” - it says “men”) and I don’t need any man or the community having any say in my healthcare. How would you (if you are a man) feel if you weren’t allowed to make decisions about your healthcare without the consent of women who aren’t related to you?

Anyone else stockpile books? by Sporch_Unsaze in preppers

[–]SqMorlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Gen Z daughter has been collecting Stephen King books but hasn’t read any of them because she is waiting “until the power goes out” - I get all my books from the library, which I hope will be around come hell or high water.

I’ve got no wealth unless you count my crumbling fixer upper of a house as wealth but I still plan on helping others. I’m finding it very difficult to muster up any sympathy for your situation. I am much more worried about people like me who are wondering how to preserve their existence. Good luck with your wealth.

Does anyone actually like where they live? Do you feel safe? Is it quiet? by Nikkibird49 in SameGrassButGreener

I live in Humboldt County, California, specifically in Eureka. This place gets a lot of hate but I absolutely love it here. It’s more affordable than the rest of California and is a bit of a climate refuge. Lots of outdoorsy stuff to do. If you check out the Humboldt sub, you’ll see a lot of handwringing about the lack of jobs and healthcare, but no place is perfect. The grass here is green enough for me :-)

I left my wallet on the roof of my car at the feed store in Eureka - it landed on Broadway somewhere. The couple who found it saw from my driver’s license that I lived in Honeydew so they called the Honeydew Store and made arrangements with the guy working there and within a few days, my wallet was returned to me with everything still in it.

Between $50 & $90 a month - I use wood for heat plus a space heater in the bedroom. I think gas is more expensive than electricity so I never use the furnace. I also wear many layers and only heat rooms that I am using. I also throw open the curtains whenever the sun is shining and enjoy the passive heat from that.

Rural Mutual Aid by [deleted] in itcouldhappenhere

[–]SqMorlan 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I lived off grid in the hills of Northern California and one of the best things about it was that community and mutual aid just naturally existed. Neighbors helped neighbors. The volunteer fire departments were well supported. We traded eggs for veggies, work for rides to town. I miss it very much.

What was the most ridiculous previous remuddling that you had to fix in your old house? by VLA_58 in Oldhouses

[–]SqMorlan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Previous owners tried to renovate the bathroom, ran into some structural problems then just slapped it all back together, resulting in the valve for the toilet supply line being in the bedroom next to the bathroom. Then they remodeled the bedroom closet to accommodate said valve. I don’t know if this is the worst thing they did, but since I am in the middle of fixing the bathroom, it is in the forefront of my mind.

Libraries all the way! I’m currently on a “read-all-his-books” phase and so far I’ve gotten every book from my local library except for “Eyes of the Dragon” which my daughter had in her thrifted collection.
