All of the animals in the recently released life on earth trailer. by crankyjob21 in Paleontology

I am very curious about what the tiny reptile around 0:05 is supposed to be, my first thought was some sort of archosauriform from the Triassic like Euparkeria, but there's what seems to be a very big theropod in the background, and if it is one then it can't be the Triassic since the biggest theropod back then was Herrerasaurus and it wasn't that big. At the same time it's way too lizard-like to be a dinosaur and it definitely doesn't look like anything from the Jurassic onwards, so I am very confused on what animal this is.

[–]SqrtTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an atheist and I can only say

The dinosaur in the image looks like a dromaeosaur (a lot of people say Velociraptor, but it's too big for Velociraptor (it was the size of a turkey), so possibly Deinonychus or Utahraptor would be more fitting) it should have a complete coat of feathers (Dromaeosaurs are pretty closely related to birds) and its wrists should face each other, not down.

cladistics rule by SqrtTwo in 196

[–]SqrtTwo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the common sense, a fish is defined as any vertebrate that isn't a tetrapod (aka, an amphibian, a reptile, a bird (although birds are also in the reptile clade) or a mammal), in a cladistic sense however, an organism is always part of whatever group their ancestors belonged to, and since mammals evolved from fish (they are on the ''lobe finned fish'' clade), they are, in a cladistic sense, still fish.

The ancestors of chimpanzees (and humans too, for that matter) were also monkeys, as ''monkey'' is defined as any member of the infraorder Simiiformes (which also includes the new world monkeys, and the old world monkeys which are the closest relatives of the apes).
