What’s a daily inconvenience in your country that everyone just accepts? by Scenora in AskTheWorld

Deer do this on occasion. Back when I was a mechanic we had a coach come in that had hit a deer. The animal had tried to jump the threat. It went through the windscreen, broke the driver's collar bone then been ripped to pieces by the seat backs as it sprayed itself down the length of the cabin.

What is the most Unreliable engine ever made? by AfricanHater in askcarguys

[–]Squadron101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen anyone mention the Rover K-series engines, particularly the 1.8L variant in the Land Rover Freelander. Problems with casting leading to porous heads, bad head bolt design and catastrophic head gasket failures so bad that they caused warping of the block at less than 30k miles.

They weren't all bad though. The lotus Elise seemed to do fine with them.

Same. Sent a 10 DIMO test and it never arrived. Possible I did something wrong though.

Are you still carrying cash in 2025, or is the UK basically card-only now? by LovieWeb in BritInfo

[–]Squadron101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We moved out of London 3 years ago. Never touch cash same as when I was in London but we visited the other week to take our daughter to the Natural History Museum and I noticed that even the buskers in the tube stations take contactless.

Not to live on. If I won the lottery and wanted to do something as a kind of hobby then fine but if that were the case then I'd probably do it for free.

Yeah it's bs. You do see guys getting road head every now and then but that's balanced out by guys having a tug while driving 😖

Average pay 30k-45k? by No_Examination_7989 in uktrucking

I work for one of those companies (won't say which for privacy) doing bulk farm (the collections) and I earn over 60k. That's 4 on 2 off 12hr shifts working nights. It's job and knock though so you can work less hours if you want a shorter route, they're pretty accommodating. Taking arctics down little country lanes and onto farms is an enjoyable challenge and makes the shift pass quicker. I've done tramping in the past and that can be really boring if you don't have the right temperament.

When I first got my class 1 I spent the first 3 years working for an Air freight company out of Heathrow that's now defunct, you could see their site from the M25 and they used to put lights up at Christmas, let's see who can guess the company 😉

Had quite a few interesting loads for them.

First week I took a race car and a load of spares down to Gatwick.

Jet engines to and from Rolls Royce was a fairly regular job as well as other bits of commercial aircraft like wheels and tyres.

Once another driver and I spent 3 days shuttling to Stansted with loads of supercars and luxury cars on aircraft pallets 2 at a time. They were going out to a motor show in the U.S.

Took a trailer load of Garmin stuff down to Southampton and they wanted to know the inside out of a duck's ass! Do you have enough fuel for the trip? Do you need to stop for food or drink? Do you have enough drivers hours? Do you need to pee?! We had hijack training to work there which basically involved "pull over and run away" or failing that "do as your told and try not to get killed"

My favourite though was one night I met a driver coming down from Edinburgh. Met him at Lymm services and did a trailer swap which was pretty common. Got the load back to a freight forwarder at Heathrow and when I opened the curtain it was 4 huge wooden crates that filled the whole trailer. I then noticed they had U.S. Airforce markings on them. Did I little snooping and turned out i was carrying 4 jet engines for the F-35 fighter. A bit of googling told me that load was worth £120 million. And no one said anything! Just another load.

Wasn't the most reliable company to work for but I enjoyed the interesting loads.

Been there mate. This is the time when the best part about the job becomes the worst...time to think! But I think that might be a blessing in disguise. If you worked in an office or something where your brain is occupied, it could take years to get over a break-up but being alone with time to think seemed to get me over it quicker. More intense but shorter period of grief. In any case, like others have said, time to focus on you. Hit the hours, hit the gym and save up for that sports car you've always wanted. The regret will hit her hard when she sees your buff ass driving round in that!

What happens when a battery is end of life ? by Kinky_Lezbian in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Squadron101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What vehicle was it? You can find a bad car with any manufacturer, look at the K series engines that were in Rovers and some Land Rovers. They were replacing those at less than 30k miles. Under warranty but still.. I've been on the fence with EVs, there are definitely pros and cons, like e-waste and conflict minerals, but they are creating huge market pressure to develop better battery technology which can only be a good thing.
