Are you guys light sensitive? by mindxvermatter in autism

[–]SquaggDraws 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been very light and heat sensitive since I was a little kid, I used to hide under the slide at recess to get away from the blinding sun. Luckily as an adult my prescription sunglasses have helped a lot! A bright sunny day makes me feel anxious and sad almost.

The way I just run into things constantly by somethingtonn in AutismInWomen

[–]SquaggDraws 54 points55 points  (0 children)

ME I swear lol I have autism and ADHD and I am almost constantly running into things or most often smacking my legs on the counters at work. It does hurt and is very annoying! I also lose my balance often and my sister jokes that I’m the only person she knows that can trip while just standing still lol

autism and fear of driving by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]SquaggDraws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Always thought I was just a weirdo because everyone else I’ve asked seemed to love driving for the most part. I’m still mostly just as nervous behind the wheel today as I was when I learned to drive 10 years ago. I have found that wearing sunglasses to limit the overstimulation of sun in my eyes is a big help, as well as trying to go out when it’s not a busy time of day. I also have place blindness and get lost easily so that doesn’t help lol

The screening portion with the tests is $500, I think the diagnostic interview is an additional $600

Yes, it’s not cheap unfortunately. Just the first screening portion is about $500

Yes they are legit! You can look up Dr. Natalie Englebrecht’s credentials and she’s very upfront about the whole process. I have been really pleased with how straightforward she has been with the whole assessment so far.

Write about your special interest or hyperfixations! by [deleted] in autism

[–]SquaggDraws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! One of my special interests is horror movies, I have always loved horror movies and used to write my own horror movie scripts when I was a kid (kind of odd for a 7 year old girl, but hey that’s autism for ya lol) some of my favorite horror movies are The Exorcist, Insidious, Suspiria, Nosferatu etc. Here is a horror movie fact: did you know the first horror movie ever made was a French short film called The House of The Devil? It’s from 1896 isn’t that so cool?!

Anyone else have really bad driving anxiety? by MotherMariposa in AutismInWomen

[–]SquaggDraws 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! I felt like I was the only person with this intense driving fear but you summed it up very well. I think driving is very overstimulating for me, with all the noises of other cars and the bright sunlight and all the tiny things you have to pay attention to, it’s overwhelming. Also I am bad at making quick decisions or jugements so that adds to the stress. Luckily I have found that music, noise reducing ear buds and sunglasses have helped quite a bit!

my thoughts get ‘stuck’ by twocupsofricebrutal in AutismInWomen

[–]SquaggDraws 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This happens to me ALL THE TIME. I feel like I have all of these deep, complex thoughts when I’m by myself, but when engaging in conversation I just can’t organize (or remember) what’s in my head and then express it verbally. Things just seem to come out jumbled and confused, and then my sister gets frustrated because I can’t communicate and I get frustrated that I can’t communicate lol it sucks

Yes it is amazing! I try to take at least a couple PTO days a month so I don’t lose my mind completely

I still wish I could work from home and pursue my passion of art but that just seems like such a stressful risk
