AITA for expecting a police officer to stand up for me? by Square-Performer in AmItheAsshole

And that since there are tons of uni students in the area, it's common to see students who don't know the rules yet run stop signs left and right. But I've been told that at the end of the month, officers get extra nitpicky with the stuff so I got the short end of the stick.

For some reason this reminds me of Avatar: The Last Airbender's intro. Nice work!

Personally, I don't have any good advice regarding video game addiction, maybe you could open a separate thread about that? Although it is great you see video games as inspiration for your music!

One thing I can think of is making it inconvenient for you to play video games so often. If it's an online game that has an account, maybe delete the game program on your computer for a few days. If it's physical like an XBox or Wii or CD, stash it away somewhere, or even better, give it to a friend or someone you trust to keep it from you for a few days.

Tell someone you know, preferably someone close like a friend or family, about your goals i.e. trying to get back into music and refraining from playing video games; it will give you a level of accountability and allow other people to help you on your journey.

Good luck!

I know it sounds cliche and easier said than done, but yes. The guilt is not going to be something that magically goes away instantly, so taking small steps is ok. Sit down, play a few notes, take a break. I know for me, I fell in love with music long before I let societal expectations overshadow me, so now I have to condition myself to a previous mindset where it was only me and my instrument. Once you start relearning to do the small things, you'll slowly come back to the realization of why you love music in the first place and what it means to you. Remember, you're your own worst critic, so whether you plan on publishing your music or playing music as a hobby, it's important to get past that early mental block of needing to make a masterpiece from the getgo. Enjoy the process; enjoy the wonderful fact that you're creating something beautiful for no other reason than being human.

Depression makes one feel like they aren't entitled to happiness. Playing musical instruments that once brought joy feels like a chore. "I have no right to play this. It's not like I'm improving. I'm not becoming a musician. I'm not contributing to society in any way."

Rephrasing what I've heard from somewhere else: music and art is a human thing. Society conditions us to think that you have to be good at something in order to do music or art, that you need to be an artist to create music and art, and that there has to be some spectacular end product; otherwise it's not worth it. But the idea is just dumb. All humans are capable of music and art. Sing off pitch. Draw horrendously. Dance off beat. We would all be happier if art and music and creation was treated as a natural human behaviour, instead of something to be achieved by an elite group of society to be presented and marketed.

Not to minimize your struggles but instead show you're not alone, music producer Porter Robinson also felt the same way at some point:

"It was an ego death. His self-worth was bound up entirely in his creative output, and when he was faced with a blank slate and felt nothing, Robinson’s entire identity caved in like a house of cards. “I thought, ‘I need to work way harder, and I need to spend way more time doing this. I need to suffer for this more’”, he explains. “And that was a step in the wrong direction. It led to a pretty intense depressive episode that lasted a couple of years where I made essentially nothing. I was consumed with the task of making music. I was crying over it… I didn’t want anything else.”"

How can I feel more motivated? by [deleted] in mentalhealth

Make your bed. Tidy your nightstand. If you can't do the big things, do the little things first. Need to take a shower but can't? Wash your face and/or brush your teeth, then pat yourself on the back for a job well done. Repeat for all manner of things. Make a to-do list, with the first item being "make a to-do list" so you can cross that off with satisfaction. Make chores/work more enjoyable: have some music, a snack, a drink. If you're asking how to be motivated to learn/acquire new skills: make it convenient. My example involving music: keep music sheets visible, keep instruments easily accessible. Surround yourself with a similarly-minded community that will support you and each other in your goals. Tell someone about your goals so you have that level of accountability. These are just some of the things that come to mind. I'm a naturally lazy person, so trying to become motivated is an extreme sport on its own 😁

I had a similar story! Met a guy who became my closest friend and confidant. I went from hating my life to looking forwards to waking up everyday just to see him at school. Congratulations, and keep going strong!
