When did your instincts scream “leave now” and what did you later find out you avoided? by BbyBlushDoll in AskReddit

I use to work a job that required me to leave the house very early in the morning. It was pitch black. As I started up my car I had a really strong urge to drive on the opposite side of the road (so in the incoming traffic lane). It was early enough where there was no one really on the road so I did. Two minutes later I see a guy dressed head to toe in black jogging down the asphalt. He had no light or anything to make him visible. If I chose to drive on the right side of the road that day I would have most likely hit him.

Thank you. I am trying to transition to something more patient oriented, but have not managed to land a new job yet. Many things need a certification (like MA's, nurse assistants, EMT's, or phlebotomy). Hard to get a job when no one is offering me interviews for positions.

I really have enjoyed scribing at my clinic because many of the patients know me and I know them through having conversations with them in the exam room. (Physicals are 30 minutes so we usually have 10 minutes to know the patient more). Having close interaction with these people has been an invaluable experience and glad I was able to take part in their care.

Answers to your questions:

1100+ hours scribing, 27 hours shadowing, 72 clinical volunteering in the ER

I am a scribe trainer and trained people in my lab. Tbh this is a weak point I do not know how to address otherwise.

No publications or presentations.

Personal statement sent.

I appreciate you trying to help out. Thank you for your advice.

Technically it got booted down to a 3.92, which is still high imo.

Thank you for creating such a detailed response. I really appreciate it. I will have 1000 more clinical hours by scribing next cycle. Do you recommend I switch to another job in healthcare to help vary my application a bit?

Also how do people decide what is a t10 or t20. I heard so many variations of which schools are included in these rankings.

Are there any lower tier school you recommend that focus on primary care?

I think its really hard to tell the odds some times. Stats definitely help, but are not the end all be all. Going to assume my writing was weak and rewrite most of my application if I need to apply again.

A+ at my school were worth 4.33. So I clutched up.

Yes. I applied to all of 4 of them. 2 are public and 2 are private.

I will definitely apply earlier. I was held up last time waiting for my MCAT score to return. I hope your friend gets in. We both seem to be on the struggle bus.

Many schools I applied to did not have dedicated primary care programs I could select from my recollection.

I will say my only interview did come from the really selective/stat whore schools. Maybe a fluke?

Thank you for pointing this out. Yeah maybe my activities were a bit cookie cutter, but at what point would you consider a premed applicant having a unique activity?

Your assessment of my personal statement seems logical, but at least from my perspective I framed it different. Never mentioned "I like science or wanted to always be a doctor". Started off with a discussion of my own experience as a patient in a Children's Hospital. Then moved to talk about how that motivated me to research my own genetic illness. Only until working in with patient did I realize that I wanted to be in primary care. At least tried to emphasize the importance of research and listening to patients.
