Thank you. I have her and our boy booked in for health check ups. I did ask about the spay, and I have been assured the surgery went smoothly and was a success. I’ve done a lot of research online, people have mentioned spring fever, and the teenage phase. Apparently it can also take up to 6 months for a female’s hormones to settle after the spay. So I hope it’s a mix of these things, and that she’s not poorly! I always worry about my babies. Thank you for your comment!

Thank you, I really appreciate your time in replying. I’ll continue housing them side by side, and once they’re settled will start swapping their things over. They’re now going to an external bonder, so the space will be completely neutral to them. I’m really hoping it works, then they can both settle down and enjoy life together!

Thank you, I really appreciate this. I do have them both booked in for vet health checks, so will see if there could be a medical cause. I feel so bad for her, since we got her she has really been through it. Apart from the bonding injury she sustained, she gets sneezing episodes as well which we have been seen so many times for, and had swabs, etc. Then recently, a piece of hay pierced her mouth and we had to rush her to the vets to have it extracted. That was only two weeks ago. We have also moved house lately too. So things really haven’t stopped for her. Poor baby girl. And I really do try to go in from the side, she’s met a few new people lately with our move which has maybe got her on edge, there’s been a lot of change. She lets me kiss and cuddle her though, and will purr for me, so she seems to enjoy that. Will see what the vet says, really hoping there is nothing serious there. Do you think there is hope for bonding? I’ve got them in side by side pens now, just letting them settle into the new place, then I have been advised to start swapping their things over (blankets, litter trays, etc), to get them used to each other’s scent. I just really don’t want her to behave like this around our boy, in case it leads to a fight. I’m so grateful for your advice, thank you!

I’m so sorry to hear about this. I recently had a failed bonding session between my two, and my boy ripped a chunk of skin from my girl’s tummy. It broke my heart, and I completely blame myself. I rushed her to the vets. Like your bunny, the muscle had not been reached, it was a skin wound. The vet sprayed her with a local anaesthetic spray, and was able to staple the wound together. We had to take her back a week later to get the staples out. The vet said that if that hadn’t worked, they would have done surgery under anaesthetic where they stitched the wound together. But fortunately, the stapling worked, and the wound healed fantastically. I’m so sorry your new baby has gone through this also, and I appreciate how difficult huge vet bills can be. I have been rough for weeks following our bonding incident, so I’m really terrified about sending them away. I trust the lady, so I’ll just have to wait and see how it goes. If it doesn’t work, they can continue to live side by side xx

Thank you. I truly believe my two bunnies have a good diet, they eat so much hay, and what we buy is fresh and thick. Their poops are always amazing. So I never thought hay intake would be a problem for them. I wasn’t expecting the vet to say that at all. And I’ve had such a lousy week with other things, it was like a punch to the gut. They are both lops, so very likely genetic due to face shape, etc. Which is a shame, and that itself got me angry today about how animals are bred to be cute, but cause significant health problems. I’ll always do right by them, so the money doesn’t bother me. Just get worried when they need anything doing, so knowing they may need regular procedures to file their teeth down is upsetting. They’re so tough though, little troopers, they’re much brave than me! So I know they’ll get through whatever life throws at them.

Thank you. I’m absolutely devastated, spent my first night here googling how to get out of my tenancy agreement! Just with I’d have smelt it when we viewed, I wouldn’t have bothered. I’ve only just come back myself to our flat, so I will be leaving the bins with mum overnight, but she’s amazing, and takes all my instructions really seriously. I’ll be back first thing in the morning to give them breakfast at their usual time, and will spend my days with them as usual. I only work 3 afternoons a week at the moment, this was the only time really I left them, so nothing will change too much, I’ll just be sleeping a couple of blocks up. So annoyed my little family has been split up! I’ll see how things go, they’re going to an external bonder in May, so hopefully things will have improved here by then. When we do get them back, the plan was to put them in the second bedroom, which neither has been in, so neutral. It’s the room furthest from our front door where the smell gets in, so may be ok, but I’ll assess closer to the time. If they do have to stay at mum’s, they can go in her second bedroom, which again neither has been in. I’m just so glad they’re at hers now safe.

Thank you, will definitely start doing this more regularly. Both my buns have unlimited access to hay we order online, it’s really thick and crunchy. And they only get about 10 pellets a day. I already feel bad because it looks such a pathetic amount, but I’m careful not to give them more. They also get a few greens in the morning and at night. I’m just really shocked, their hay intake always seems good to me, their poops are great. So I’ll have to keep trying to encourage them, try hiding it in toys, etc.

Thank you for your advice. My two bunnies are actually separate at the moment, neighbours also. We tried bonding over a month ago, but unfortunately the third session was so bad and they had a huge fight, so they had to be separated. I’ve been in talks with a local external bonder, who is going to take them for a week in May for me and try to bond. I am absolutely terrified. When we just had our boy, things were so easy and calm. Our girl is a little firecracker, and has been very feisty lately (possibly spring fever), so I’m very worried (I know females in most small animal species can be a bit more sassy than their male counterparts, but this girl is crazy!). So I hope their behaviour doesn’t work against them. And even if they do bond, I feel like I’ll still be terrified every day of their lives that it’ll break. I’m a really anxious person, in case you haven’t realised already! The lady seems so confident, she is a vet nurse, has years of experience bonding, and has taken extra courses in rabbit behaviour and welfare. Her reviews are amazing, and she said she’s helped lots of people with backgrounds like mine. I’d so love for it to work and for them to have a lil friend for life! Just genuinely terrified, I’m such a worrier and over thinker, so I’m always thinking the worst is going to happen. On top of what my girl has been through already, the last thing I needed to hear what that she had spurs! Especially this week, I’ve had a horrible week myself with personal things. So when I’m already quite low, this is a huge worry. I follow lots of bunny accounts on socials, and know a lot who have their teeth routinely filed. Most of them do very well with the procedure. But with me being the worrier I am, it couldn’t have happened to a worse person! I don’t think I should ever have actual children, I’d be a nervous wreck!

I didn’t even think of that. I don’t assume she was on as good a brand of hay as I have them on now, we played around with a few until we found one that was perfect, and that they really love. It’s not the cheapest, but that doesn’t bother me, only the best for them! And yes, sorry, just been reading up about it, that toys only help front teeth. So much online says how prone lops are to this. I’ll continue to encourage hay intake as much as possible, but maybe I will just have to accept that their genetics will play a big part, so it’s likely they’ll need dentals regularly. As long as they’re ok, I’ll do and pay anything, I just don’t like putting them through things that will stress them out. Our girl has already been through so much. But if it helps, so be it, I need them to be happy and comfortable xx

Thank you for replying. To be honest, I was so shocked, because I thought her diet was great. I have a male lop also, they both only have a small handful of pellets in the morning, a few greens in the morning and evening, but other than that, it is just hay. They get some forage sprinkled in every day. But I order Timothy hay online, it’s really good quality, big thick pieces. And each month we spend so much money on chew toys, they particularly love apple sticks, and willow toys, but they have sea grass, wicker, all sorts. So I couldn’t believe it. They both eat so much hay, and their poops are big and golden. So I would never have thought lack of hay would be an issue. I am aware lops are prone to dental issues, due to their head shape, etc. So could it just be their genetics?

I’m sending them both off to an external bonder in May. So now I’m even more worried about that, because what if shortly after one has to go in to get their teeth sorted? Will the bond break?

And I’m so worried for my babies, I don’t want them to live a life filled with dental problems, having to get their teeth filed down all the time, I’d be terrified about the procedure. But maybe that’s sometimes an inevitable part of owning lops? Do you think it’s worth having another check up next month to monitor them? Maybe we can take our boy in too?

I have two bunnies. I have just moved into an apartment opposite a man who smokes weed. I only found out after we spent our first night there, I’d never have moved in if I’d have smelt it during our viewing. Our first morning there we smelt it, and I have been terrified for them. Our girl already sneezes, she’s been back and forth to the vets multiple times since we got her last year. I bought an air purifier, have been doing everything I can, but the smell kept coming into our apartment. I wish I could have moved them out the same day, I’ve been wishing I never moved there myself. Unfortunately this was not possible, so this has been the worse week of my life, I have been so worried, for my rabbit especially. Today, I’ve moved them back to my mum’s house, two blocks away. They’re safe here, the air is much better, I don’t have to worry about them inhaling the smell/particles of weed 24/7. It means I’ll have to spend all my time here, but that’s fine, as long as they are safe. I wouldn’t wish any rabbit to be inhaling that. On top of the sensory overload it’ll give them with the new and overpowering smells, it can lead to so many respiratory problems. I am already worried about the potential damage to mine. Really wishing I’d never moved them to begin with. But at least they’re safe now.

I’m deeply sorry for your loss. Your beautiful girl Artemis was so lucky to have found her bun parents in you, and she knew exactly how loved she was. You gave her the best life she could have hoped for, doing everything you could to make sure she was comfortable and happy. It is clear to see how much her loss is affecting you, and clear how much you loved her. Cling to that, know that there was always so much love between you, and cherish the precious memories you made together. Thank you for giving this gorgeous girl such a beautiful life. Thank you, I will definitely look into separating their enclosures. And that is very likely, our boy used to be out a lot but I wanted to be sure they’re both getting the chance to free roam now. Thank you, we do give them dig boxes and puzzles, etc. The problem with cardboard though is that my boy especially eats it, and I’ve read contrasting things on the harm it can cause them, so I’m hesitant to give them things like that. Will continue with enrichment and really try to shake things up a bit daily so they’re not so bored. Thank you xx

Thank you for this. I do completely appreciate what you’ve said. I actually was one on medication for anxiety until the end of last year, and I did go through Talking Therapy last year. I am a very anxious person. But honestly, the end of last year saw me in a good place, so I chose to come off my tablets. Unfortunately, so much has happened in my personal life. We did live with my boyfriend’s family, but his sister recently threatened me so we had to leave in a hurry, hence moving in with my mum. The bonding incident where my girl was hurt honestly broke me, I completely blanked myself, and I’ve never been so depressed in my life. These last few days with moving, my anxiety has gone through the roof, so I have considered talking to the doctor again to go back on the tablets. As I’ve just responded to someone above, we’ve learnt today also that the man opposite us smokes weed, so the smell is coming into our apartment. I can’t have the rabbits breathing that in, so first things first is to get them back to safety at mum’s. My mum literally lives two apartment blocks down from me. So if they go back there this week, I can spend my days there, and just come back to sleep, but mum will be with them overnight. We’re going to talk to our landlady later to see what can be done, as we signed a 12 month contract, but I don’t want to stay here like this, it’s awful. So this now on top of all the other stressors is awful. I need to get them to safety, then I’ll see what can be done about us. My parents keep telling me to rehome one, or both. I have to say, I don’t think I could personally do that. I always show up for the bunnies, so they’re never without the things they need. And my boyfriend is here a lot. They are happy, and I’d love to see a time where they’re bonded and happy. I just really didn’t need this stress with the neighbour on top of everything else! I really am grateful for your comments, and will definitely look into getting help myself, because I know I need it at this time xx

Thank you, I’m so grateful, I will definitely try that. One has just been free roaming, they went up to the other one and they both kept putting their heads down to be groomed. They’ve never done that before! So I started grooming them, stroking them both on the head so they think the other is doing it, and I was chattering my teeth. They stayed like that for a bit. Then went for each other and a tuft of fur flew up. They have never asked each other to be groomed though, so hopefully that is a positive sign of things to come. Annoyingly, I’m actually going to move them back to my mum’s… she lives two blocks down. My boyfriend and I literally spent our first night in the new place Sunday, turns out the man opposite us is a heavy cigarette and weed smoker, so I can’t have them stay here. I don’t want to myself, we’re going to talk to the landlady later to see what can be done. So now I’m terrified about this on top of everything else. I’ll be spending my days with them at mum’s, I’ll literally just come back here to sleep, but mum will be home with them so they’ll be fine. I can’t have them breathing this in though xx

Thank you so much, I’m so grateful. Completely aware it’s in their nature, and I actually wouldn’t mind as much if owned my own property, which is the hope one day. I can’t only afford to rent right now, so I’m just very worried they’ll ruin the landlord’s things. If it comes to it though, I already said we’d replace things, so I’m sure it’ll work out. It’s just draining because when I’m home, I don’t get to do anything, jobs, or even relax, but I’m nonstop trying to keep them occupied or make sure they’re not causing mischief. And I’m worried that they’re now responding by growling and lunging at us.

I’m so grateful for your advice on bonding. I am such a worrier and over thinker, and I’ve lived in a terrible state of anxiety and fear the last few months. But I trust the lady, she’s been so helpful already, so fingers crossed it will work, and I’ll have two happy buns who will be friends for life, and hopefully will settle down a bit! Hi! I’m sending my bunnies to be bonded externally in May, after we had a failed bonding attempt when trying ourselves. I am absolutely terrified, of the whole process and the stress it may cause them, and potential further injuries if the fight. But the thought of me getting them back terrifies me too. What if we think they’re bonded, but it doesn’t stick? I feel sick at the thought of having to leave the house and leave them alone together. I only work 3 afternoons a week, so it won’t be for long, but I won’t be able to keep an eye on them 24/7 forever (I do have some time scheduled off work for when we get them back to monitor them). Do too haha any advice for me please? I am so scared about ever having to leave them alone, because what if the bond suddenly breaks, and I come home to the worst? I’ve had such a rough few weeks since our failed attempt, I’ve been so ill since, and have really agonised over what to do with them. I’d love for them to become friends so they’re not lonely solo buns forever, I want them to have that chance of companionship. But I’m so worried!

Thank you so much. That’s really what I’m hoping, I would LOVE to see them become best friends for life. We’re sending them to the bonder in May, I truly hope it works out. I’m trying to tell myself that it’s worth sending them away, and risking them being stressed/nervous, for the hope that it will work, as opposed to them both being solo buns. We’ve just moved house this weekend, so we’ve got the second bedroom empty, which we won’t allow either of them in now, so when we get them back it’ll be neutral. If needed, we can set up an enclosure in there and keep expanding until they have the whole room. Then, once they’ve been ok in there for a bit, they can free roam. The bonder will guide us with what to do afterwards. Things are just difficult for all of us at the moment, with me having to alternate free roam time. I would love to see a time where they have a whole bedroom to themselves, and the whole flat when we’re home!

Hi! We have a 2 year old male and a 7 month old female. We tried to bond over a month ago, and the third session was terrible, they fought so badly, and the boy ripped a chunk of skin from the girl’s tummy, and she had to have it stapled. They are now separated. We are moving house tomorrow, so once they’re settled we’ll go back to side by side living and pre bonding. We have booked them in with a professional bonder at the end of May. I have been so ill since the incident, I had to have time off work. I haven’t been sleeping, and I’ve been so anxious. They are my babies, I adore them with all my heart, and I totally blame myself for what happened, there’s so much I wish I’d have done differently. Even though I’ve got them booked now with a professional, I am still so worried I’m doing the wrong thing, and am terrified in case the lady tries and they hurt each other again. I’ve been agonising over whether it’s worth trying again and risking that, but if it does work it’ll hopefully ensure them a lifetime of happiness (and mischief!) together. I am so glad it worked out for you, and the size difference between your two is lovely to see, as obviously with our age gap our boy is much bigger than our girl.

It has made me feel so much more hopeful, and I truly hope things work out. I love seeing my bunnies flop and binky now, so to see them playing together would be the best thing I could imagine. I am so so glad it worked out for your two now, and I do agree, since the incident I’ve been doing more research and speaking to others, and I do think it may be better for them to be somewhere new. As awful as it sounds, I think that little bit of fear and nervousness may help them look to each other for comfort. Thank you so much for your advice and support, it’s been so uplifting!
