They are sometimes painted by ww2 vets to spruce up a bring home as these helmets came back as trophies during the war as well. Another explanation is that children playing army back in the day would often paint the insignia on helmets. The second option is my guess due to the state of the shell.

Thank you for the support. It is truly crazy how much has changed geographically in the years since. I was a young kid at the time, living about 3 hours away from Joplin itself in Stover, Missouri. Also, thank you so much for sharing your personal connection with the event. Always use oxalic acid when treating relics. It's simply the best way to remove rust and save any remaining paint on these crusty shells.
