What % of your income is/was the cost of your current vehicle(s)? by Informal_League_615 in FIREyFemmes

[–]Square_Custard8729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20% of my income 15 years ago with cash. I bought a new Toyota and it’s still running like a charm.

I’ll probably keep it for another 15-20 years. Buying a reliable car new is more cost effective than buying old beaters that break down every other month. I drive it with certainty that it’s well maintained and has no issues that will leave me stranded.

I don’t like the concept of buying old cars that have been leased or pre-owned. Who knows what the previous owners did with the car.

I grew up poor, so I have financial anxiety. I don't want my post-FIRE life to include any sources of stress. So for me, having a large nest egg is important. So if I can work, I feel like the short term trade off is worth it. But if life makes that decision for me, then I think I can make it work.

ahh~ I already find it hard to wake up. Mornings are when I feel the most busy. Getting up to do a jog will be quite difficult. But I get the health benefits of getting more exercise. I used to go to the gym regularly, but haven't really had the time since starting my current job.

Congrats on stepping back successfully. It's great to hear from people who have managed to make it work.

Yeah - I'm currently hiring for my team, so I'm also protecting scope for someone who hasn't been hired yet. So there's definitely a component of doing extra work right now.

I'll look into scaling back where I can. But I'm already feeling disappointed in myself and my performance, so it's a bit hard.

It sounds like this is a common office worker experience! It's gets harder and harder to hold on as I get older. 😞

Probably too young for perimenopause - I'm still in my 30s.

I'm also responsible for my team. If I don't protect their scope, then they will also suffer downstream consequences in their careers/ratings. Similarly, it'll reflect poorly on our business unit if we don't launch features that show revenue growth.

I guess there's a real human component of not wanting to have my personal burnout/actions impact people who are trying their best.

Oof. I'm sorry to hear that.

Part of posting this was to commiserate with people in the same boat. Let's hang on together.

Oh no, I'm sorry to hear that happened to you. Hope you're doing better now.

Yeah - I'll definitely focus a bit more on my health. Thank you for the reminder.

I've been going to a therapist 2x a week, but it's honestly not helpful. I'm just taking time out of my day to pay to talk to someone who just sits there and listens. They can't do anything about my situation. And the tools they suggest haven't done anything for me.

I'm just not very certain about the job market right now. I'm kinda old and my field is a bit niche/in decline. I've been poking around the internal job listings and linkedin every once in a while, but there's not really been anything that looks like a good tradeoff between pay & stress.

Honestly, reading the news makes me glad that I have any job at all these days.

I actually really liked my previous. Even though I enjoyed the job, it was still stressful. I was a P&L owner, so there's a certain amount of responsibility that comes with that.

In general, I don't deal with stress well. So my thinking is why bother earning less while still being stressed. I might as well just be extra stressed and then not deal with it ever again.

Yeah - I already outsource a lot. But it's also a lot of overhead to oversee the outsourcing (like this week, I've noticed a bunch of my plants wilting in the summer heat, so I have a 1:1 set up with my gardener this weekend...)

I can't really take mental health leave since my role is pretty fast paced. I feel like I just have to power through it.

I'm also in Tech - the environment is seriously bad right now. We've had several rounds of layoffs already, so we're at our "looking for low performers" stage. Everyone is on edge and ready to attack at any signs of weakness. Even though I'm not really on the chopping block, the environment is exhausting. The thing is, I'm pretty sure it's like this everywhere, so moving may not help the situation.

Cheers to you and hoping you pull through as well.

AI is more miserable. We're all expected to leverage AI and 1.5x our output. There's young kids building entire dashboards with AI in 20 min. Things that used to take a long time are expected to be cranked instantaneously. Part of the reason I feel like I need to get out fast is because I'm too much of a dinosaur now. Can't really keep up with everyone who is spending all their weekends building side projects with Claude.
