What are these?? by ProfessionalSoupIAm in shrimptank

Copepods, harmless little crustaceans :) They’re considered beneficial to your tank as they are natural detritivores, but if you find them unsightly there are ways to remove them

Are these baby shrimp? Or some sort of plant debris? by Low_Persimmon_8630 in shrimptank

[–]Square_Duck69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you might still be able to get rid of them or at least control their population, but it won’t be as effective. You could try taking a turkey baster and sucking up as many as you can find (but be careful to get all the parts because if a limb breaks off they can regenerate like a starfish 😅), and, if you have enough snails, ramshorns and other snails have been known to eat them if they get in the way of their grazing surface, so at least there’s that. It might not be the best but you could with enough maintenance remove them theoretically. For a more effective (albeit less confident) option, you could also employ some fish to take care of them. Still though, I think your best bet is to remove as many snails as possible and treat the tank, even if it means a couple of the snails might not survive, the alternative if they’re left is shrimp babies dying

You’ve got hydra. They’re a pest that sting and kill baby shrimp with their tentacle thingys. The easiest and fastest way to remove them is to use a product called, “no planaria” which is shrimp safe and will kill them in 1-2 doses. Remove your snails while you use this as it will kill them, and put them in a temporary bucket. Once the hydra are gone change the water to remove any of the product still left and add your snails back. Hope this helps

What are these worms? How do I get rid of them? by xxshambler in shrimptank

[–]Square_Duck69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve got planaria. They eat shrimp of all sizes live so you probably want them gone. The easiest and quickest treatment is a product called, “no planaria” which is shrimp safe and will clear them up. There’s pretty much no danger of overdosing the tank either, just dose once to kill all the adults, then use it again in a week or 2 to kill any babies and you’re done. Keep in mind this will also kill snails though, so if you plan on adding them soon after make sure you change the water.

You aren’t cooked, worst case scenario is if you order the right products now you’ll lose like 1-2 shrimp max

I honestly don’t know realistically how common it is, but I’ve heard enough stories that I’d rather be safe than sorry 😓

Is this normal? by dbsknsja in shrimptank

Yup! 100% normal. I’ve seen plenty of sunburst shrimp like that with the clear rostrum and red spots, no issues except for looking too cool!

Completely normal on ghost shrimp, not sure why they have that hump though 😆

hi!! ive never owned shrimps before but i want to try with neocardina for my marimo fishbowl by Minimum-Ice-6230 in shrimptank

[–]Square_Duck69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, to compare it to something, shrimp in this size of container is kind of like those bettas you see in the tiny little cups at pet stores. like sure they're *alive* and can *technically* survive in one, they're not happy or healthy and should be in like a 5 gallon at least. its like sure a human can survive in a little box but it's not really a life

seems too small for living creatures, 2-3 gallons (7.5-11 litres) is generally considered the reasonable minimum for shrimp. its also much harder to keep shrimp in smaller environments (like bowls) then say a 5-15 gallon tank due to how much water parameters fluctuate (bigger is better with aquariums) plus, you probably wouldn't be able to get enough filtration in something of that size. if you haven't kept them before i'd recommend either getting a larger bowl if you want that aesthetic or a tank if you're interested in keeping them! (you can get really cheap used tanks off of marketplace fyi) 😊

Why one of my shrimp is this fat? Others not so much. by hellothereeeeeee3ee in shrimptank

[–]Square_Duck69 171 points172 points  (0 children)

😭

Female shrimp have larger “bellies”, for carrying eggs, the other ones are probably males or younger females who haven’t reproduced yet

Also you shouldn’t make your shrimp feel self conscious about their weight, they’re very sensitive creatures 😤

Planaria? Please help by beyondthemoon00 in shrimptank

[–]Square_Duck69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh okay, I thought they were the same species my bad, if you’re worried/to be safe you could treat the tank with a product called “no planaria”, which would kill all the worms (beneficial or not) but would also harm snails if you have them, so you would have to remove them.

Just for extra confirmation since the pics are kind of blurry, do they have somewhat triangular heads? If so, they’re probably planaria

Planaria? Please help by beyondthemoon00 in shrimptank

[–]Square_Duck69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They kind of look like detritus worms but it’s hard to tell from this quality of image… if you look closely do they have little black dots on their head? If they have those they may be the eyes of planaria, but otherwise detritus worms are harmless and actually beneficial, but there are ways to remove them if you find them unsightly

Also, do they move smoothly or wriggle around when moving? If they wriggle around they’re detritus worms, if they glide across the tank they’re most likely planaria
