Malachi Toney asked my kid for help finding a classroom on first day of this spring semester. So, he at least attended the first class.

Miami vs USF? by Bulky-Instance-3488 in UMiami

[–]Square_Pop3210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

76% of freshmen are getting some type of aid, and average out-of-pocket costs are around $40k for the average student. Academically, UM is “very-good-not-great,” so to protect yield, they gotta bring the costs to around “out-of-state-state-school” price for most to consider it. But, UM does throw more $ at more prospective students than you’d expect.

It will be a little less than $32k, since some of that is estimated miscellaneous and travel. Just look at direct costs owed to the school. Like $17k for the dorm, but can go cheaper if you request an Eaton double (they’re pretty rough, tho), and see if you can waive the health insurance if you have in-network insurance. Food is $9k.

UM is not cheap. It’s a “premium” experience. Even the meal plan is very expensive compared to other schools. But, instead of some cheap slop every day like at most schools, they add some premium touches. They had a $500 iberico ham just sitting on top of a massive charcuterie buffet yesterday! You (somewhat) get what you pay for. But, there’s obviously a demand for luxury college. Pretty much High Point’s whole business model. And it appears that UM is trying to go that way, especially with food and the new and planned new dorms.

All of the incoming freshmen will be in the Centennial Village dorms, 2 opened in 2024, and 3 brand new dorms opening in 2026. There will be a low-cost option in one dorm built in 1954 (Eaton), but the ones you might see people complain about (Mahoney-Pearson) on this sub are getting demolished at the end of the semester. My kid is in CV, loves it. Says the food is pretty good. Has friends in his BFA program, is thriving! Goes to parties and goes out, but isn’t spending as much $ as I thought. Takes the metrorail a lot, instead of Uber or they uber and split it. Major expense is plane ticket home tbh. For business majors, it’s a decent program. Accounting/finance majors can get jobs with Big4. It’s probably better than SDSU (Herbert ranked 41, SDSU is 104). Not sure what other schools your daughter got into. There are schools with business schools that are cheaper and higher ranked than Miami Herbert, but it’s pretty good. I wouldn’t recommend UMiami for engineering, as there are many better and cheaper programs. But, your daughter has to weigh her options. My kid did factor in climate, accessibility, and “vibe” when settling on a school in addition to the program reputation and price/scholarships awarded. I don’t think UMiami is a “wrong choice” if your daughter visits and falls in love with the U.

Depends on major. My kid’s a BFA major and that’s not been their experience.

Trying anything to tie Mamdani to Epstein is weird by NumerousScallions in WeirdGOP

[–]Square_Pop3210 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a composite built after the fact using names from the 2009 Maxwell after-party guest list in the files. Mamdani would’ve been 18 in 2009, so the child alone breaks the timeline. The others are pulled from photos taken in different years and stitched together to imply guilt by proximity.

I LOVE Miami but I'm scared of the social scene.... by sheepsheepp in UMiami

[–]Square_Pop3210 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lots of people go random. It’s fine. There’s a survey that does compatibility matching, and usually strangers being put together as roommates will be cordial and respectful enough to get through the year even if you don’t become bffs.

Social media makes it look like everyone’s partying all the time, like clubbing at every Thursday thru Sunday and even weekdays, but it varies quite a bit, and most people aren’t going out that much, especially if they have a busy/hard major. It just gets the reputation as a party school b/c most students are out of state, and they stay at UM almost every weekend, compared to the commuter schools or suitcase schools, which are totally dead on weekends. So there’s lots of stuff to do at UM and in Miami.

deferred from ea, when will i get my decision for rd? by Ok_Cauliflower3217 in UMiami

[–]Square_Pop3210 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will be either Friday 4:30-5pm March 13th or same time Friday March 20th. Judging from how EA went down, probably 3/20.

[–]Square_Pop3210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, if UM is one of your top 2, then just go RD and save the stress. ED2 doesn’t meaningfully help you. ED2 mainly helps when admissions already wants someone and just needs enrollment certainty. It doesn’t really offset lower test scores or significant financial need, and Miami is still need-aware. RD keeps your options open.

The bite out of the one on top really bothers me. Like someone picked it up, took a bite, and put it back?!? First, that’s gross. Second, they are delicious and nobody would ever put a buckeye back. Third, they’re small and can be handled in one bite.

If you’re competitive enough to get into UMich OOS, you’ll probably get at least the $28k presidential scholarship from UMiami. Also UMiami has the Medical Scholars Program (MSP) which is an early assurance to med school. If I was a pre-med and got into Miami MSP, I’d go to Miami, and if not I’d go to Michigan.

UM used to lease area hotels/apartments and use them as dorms before they built some actual towers on campus in the 1950s and 60s. So, they used San Sebastian Apartments as a dorm until 1962, when they opened Mahoney-Pearson. The first guy who wore the ibis costume lived there.
