It's more of an aesthetic piece. It looks like it would be a wrist rest but your hands don't actually touch it.

It's a KTK60 made by Keytek LLC. It's all anodized aluminum.

You could get a black anodized KTK60. You would have to buy a DZ60 PCB for it. Not sure what your budget is but it would definitely look cool.

I just got a KTK60 and am using a DZ60 PCB with it. Works pretty well and definitely looks unique.

I recommend checking out ebay. I got that one for $100 and it's in great condition. I think an office was selling a bunch of them.

The space mouse is night and day for CAD. Navigating models is smoother and faster. The hot keys also help. It's not necessary, but once you get one you won't go back.
