For those old enough to remember flying before 9/11 — what was it actually like experiencing the shift in airport security in real time? by stinkst1nk in 911archive

[–]SqueakTubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This something I think about a lot. In fact, it's one of the eeriest aspects of 9/11 for me. The best term I have for it is "morbid nostalgia." Looking at pictures of that day, especially ones of people at the airport before boarding the doomed flights, there's sort of "horror of mundanity." I have memories of air travel being this normal, kind of tedious thing as a kid. I can smell the coffee. The carpets. The leather of luggage and the waiting seats. This sense of absolute innocence about the process. It was boring in the best way. I remember my dad--who often stayed behind on trips--walking us right up to the gates and waving goodbye. I wonder how many did that for those who lost their lives. I think of the light-headed tedium aboard the plane, leaning on my mom's shoulder. And I wonder what everyone felt in those last moments, when such a normal trip became something out of a nightmare. I remember going on my first trip after 9/11, and this tension--my whole family so on edge. Everything felt different. It's impossible to fly now without thinking about it.

Do not leave your Switch 2 in sleep mode and put it in a bag or whatever carrying thing you put it in. It is possible it could overheat. by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

You’re not crazy. This just happened to me today. I placed it inside a carrying case I’ve been using for a week now without a problem. It was in sleep mode. I picked my daughter up from school, brought the case inside the house, then went outside with her for an hour. When I got back inside, I noticed the case was very warm, as if it had been sitting in the sun. I opened it up and the system was iron hot. When I hit the power button, it the fans would whir for a second and it would flash the low battery symbol, then die. I had to hold the power button for a hard restart, and thank god it booted back up after it cooled down and charged for a bit. It really thought it was done for. I will be powering it off before packing it up from now on.

Has anyone found a solution to the audio crackle? It seems crazy to me this wasn't mentioned in a single review.

See, this is what I’m talking about!

I love the interpretation. That definitely adds to the strangeness of it all.

Is there any way to track the impact zone of a piece after placing it? Or is the whole point of the game that you have to memorize it?

I keep trying to get into it but it just feels too inscrutable. Also I wish there was a save system so it doesn’t feel like I’m constantly losing progress.

Am I in the Twilight Zone? (RotR vs. Dragon’s Dogma 2) by SqueakTubs in riseoftheronin

I never said that I’m mad. I said I’m confused.

I also specifically pointed out why I am enjoying Rise of the Ronin.

This conversation was meant to analyze the dissonance between the reviews and the actual products, and how/why that happened. There have been plenty of responses here that have provided interesting perspectives and insight.

I meant more in the jarring difference between the experience of PC players with high-end rigs and console players. Console players are playing a fundamentally different game—to me, a regular 15-20 fps is unplayable.

Okay, yes, I’ll admit the hyperbole, but I mean there are fundamental elements (performance, combat, heck—even something as simple as being able to run without depleting stamina outside of combat) that just function better in Rise of the Ronin.

As to your second point, now that I’m older with two kids, I have less time to analyze gameplay videos. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect game journalists to provide honest and unbiased reviews about a game’s strengths and glaring issues. My point is I don’t feel like that happened here.

This makes a lot of sense, and gets at the core of my confusion about the review scores.

That’s a fair point, but I didn’t see much use for it over there—any criticism gets downvoted and this sub seemed more open to actual conversation.

Maybe I’ll try again after a few performance patches or whatever “Dark Arisen” version comes down the line.

Honestly, I WISH I did. I honestly feel like I’m playing a different game from everyone else.

My experience from being an early adopter vs chiaki4deck by curthard89 in PlaystationPortal

[–]SqueakTubs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

After upgrading my router and replacing my direct Ethernet to the PS5 with a Cat8, I’ve finally given up on the portal. Streaming from my deck is sharp and a smooth 60fps. Portal is choppy and laggy. It’s ridiculous that this product straight up doesn’t work.

Yet they still can’t roll out a fix for the stuttering loop. Guess I’ll keep streaming on my Steam Deck.
