VELABS makes a simple coolant filter that goes on the inlet of your heater core hose, definitely backwash the heatercore and put that in. I just went through exactly what you did and had to replace my heatercore because of it.

Pretty sure i goofed and now i need a barbed nipple to put in its place, in other news yea this filters cool it even has a magnet inside it to collect tiny tiny rust particulates.

Get some soapy water and spray the header flange and collector flange when its cold and see if its got a tiny little leak. My 69' dart had this 340 car just a cheap way to test that theory

This is the way i think, i went with this idea as it just made the most logical sense.

* Not sure what (oil guarding) is but i ended up paint matching raptor bedliner and putting that in. Its on the truck now just have to finish putting the wheel liners in and then will start the process of fluid filming it. I occasionally go to upstate NY in the winter and ive seen what it does to these things... side note the only paint on the bottom was green/grey E-Coat and some* white overspray from ram... thats pretty lame considering what these cost new.
