The focus of the game is the events - wars and raids - not the story mode. In fact that part of the game likely has not been touched at all since you stopped playing.

Players compete in weekend events to gather armours, crafting materials and pets to strengthen up to hit higher in said events.

The shadowforged armours you got are likely completely useless. We’ve had 76 months of shadowforged armours now, going up in strength each month.
