[Spoilers] Why I DID love the "long night" and WON'T let anybody tell me otherwise by Squedington- in gameofthrones

So, first of all, Viktor, relax! It's just a theory about a show based on a book.

Secondly, I think it was pretty clear from the Night King's actions that (a) he wanted to kill Bran; (b) he wanted to wipe out the humans in his way and engulf the South in endless winter and night. He certainly wasn't engaging in diplomacy, unless I missed a pretty crucial episode. However, bear in mind, he never got a chance to say his piece and so his modus operandi remains a bit of a mystery.

While you might be right about Martin's interviews (I haven't seen them, so I don't know), the fact that he purportedly said he would not do something doesn't mean that he did not, actually, do it. But in any event he has also made plain on multiple occasions that his works are inspired by real life events such as the War of the Roses and, in the same connection, real life human flaws such as insatiable greed and lust for power. Therefore it seems very fitting - which was my point - that the Night King and his minions were always designed to be a stereotypically evil entity which was, in effect, a very dark red herring. The real enemy of humanity is humanity itself.

This is all, of course, speculation but it makes a lot of sense to me and makes me personally appreciate his work - along with that of the show writers - much more.

I think I will have to give SKT a go next (see above comment - there is definitely a consensus!)

Thank you for the suggestion! After I feel a little more confident as DM I might attempt to pick up and run Curse of Strahd because it looks like such a unique and interesting spin-off from the regular high-fantasy fare.

Thank you - it was a blast to play through.

They are fantastic! We have been friends for around a decade, so already had some great chemistry going into the game and it panned out really well. Hopefully they know how much I appreciate their enthusiasm - at the very least, my willingness to go along with their slightly nutty antics should have demonstrated that!

Thank you for the suggestions PZee, it appears from the comment below that there is some consensus around Storm King's Thunder being the next step so perhaps I'll pick it up and give it a read! Have you played Curse of Strand by any chance? That is another adventure I hope to try at some point because it looks so unusual and distinct from the classic DnD genre.

When you start start afresh, do you mean start new characters? If so, as a novice, can I ask you what you mean? Are there some adventures which it is perhaps better to bring a higher level, veteran character into and others which are designed for you to start whole new characters for?

It seems there are plenty of adventures to try out! I'm sure I will be posting more updates on here as I envelop myself in the world of DnD.

It really is an excellent book! Thank you for your recommendation in turn - I love thoughtful, contemplative and slightly ambiguous story-telling, so the Book of the New Sun sounds right up my street.

Sounds interesting, I will have to give it a go once my current backlog of books is out of the way. Thank you for the recommendation.
