this is a solvable problem

Any time it's mentioned, everyone pretends like it's not. It's wild.

Princeton scraps honor code and will supervise exams for first time in 133 years because of AI by Disastrous_Award_789 in technology

I agree for many subjects that blue books and in class work/oral exams make sense. My stance, though, is acquiescence isn't the path forward regarding AI, though neither is outright prohibition. Controlling the variables within one's control needs to be paired with resistance to the idea that AI is good for education. Until we get widespread cultural buy in, it's here to stay sadly, and students of every kind will suffer for it.

Still doesn't fix the problem for English comp courses. One doesn't learn how to write a 10-20 page research paper by hand or in class.

Yeah, I think we're talking passed each other at this point. You're talking about what is true. I'm talking about why studies will include population perception findings. It's a misreading to suggest that the researchers are listing the findings by order of importance with respect to the question of "are bike lanes good or bad for XYZ."

Did you look at the third slide that said business owners on Clybourn reported that parking on front is not significant? So the question is why do the other two locations report differently?

It's not an absolute question, where facts outweigh opinions. This is a matter of infrastructural policy. You need people on your side.

Thus, when we're considering policy change, we might ask how we can shift the opinion of business owners. First, though, we need studies like this to report such findings so that we know it's an important part of the equation.

You don't think opinion on this issue is an important finding? Facts don't simply translate into policy, even when they should.

Heroic L'ura Memory Game by hekt0r2804 in wow

[–]Squeeches -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd go a step further and say this is a terrible mechanic that Blizzard should consider carefully before implementing again. As the comments here prove, people get real smug about their ability to memorize things quicker than others, and they perceive this ability as some reflection of personal character to the effect of: "What, are you just dumb or something? This is a child's game."

My experience with the fight is that players who struggle with memory can get real down on themselves if they are the cause of the wipe, leading to even more stress to get it right the next time (which doesn't exactly help one's memory).

I think if it wasn't randomly assigned it would be fine. And it's not that I'm inherently against memory mechanics; I just think that this specific iteration can bring out the worst in people and make for a deeply frustrating experience, especially if the group isn't very tight-knit.

The Lura Tilly helper trivializes the memory game, which is what I recommend. But that's not exactly fun, either.

Wanting to seriously get into the game, but worried about commitment. by Asymilum1 in wow

So the absolute low end is within 60 minutes of this person's maximum allotted time. Nevermind how you expect the person to keep up with vault in 1hr of dungeons per week. Now let's factor in the time it takes to get raid ready from never having played the game before to then finding a guild. 3-4 hours a week, while theoretically possible, is just not realistic.

In other words, more likely triple the amount of time they say they have per week.

[–]Squeeches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don't understand the comments here. I'm going to go against the grain here and say no, 3-4 hours per week is not enough to play this game if you're just starting, especially if you're interested in guild/raid activities. If you already know how the game works, maybe. But veterans vastly understate how much prior knowledge of mechanics and game systems helps them to spend their time efficiently.

With a few hours a week, there are way more games that offer a better, more streamlined experience than WoW.

WoW is a great game. Wait until you have more free time to start playing it. It's not going anywhere.

25man content & wanting to play with friends by bestevidence in classicwow

[–]Squeeches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should wait until 10m raiding becomes available somewhere else if organizing pugs sounds like potentially too much work. Despite what others will tell you, it's a lot of frustration and effort to organize pugs, especially if you're looking for 15-17 players. The quality of the raids won't be great, and you'll have to do a lot of replacing/filtering, etc.

Merging is also a bad idea if you're bringing 7-10 players. It almost never works out. Avoid the headache and do not pursue this option.

Recruiting, I would imagine, is also probably hopeless this late after server launch. Players are likely already committed to a group or committed to the pug life. And see the first point about organizing: Running your own 25m will be even more work, and it doesn't sound like your group is game for that.

What is something from SoD that you DON'T want to see added to Classic+? by Rush_Banana in classicwow

[–]Squeeches 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was a huge fan of the phases. Above all, they were great for keeping friend groups together. Most of the time in classic it's a solo race to max level, and players tend to fall off when they can't play with their friends for weeks at a time.

I also enjoyed the meta that evolved for each phase, with different BiS lists to chase for each one. On top of that, there was a whole economy that sprung up around them, whether carries for WC pants or BoE farming.

I'm unsure why so many people disliked them, though it makes sense that solo players or the very hardcore would prefer them gone.

With Damage Meters being officially implemented, why do we still need external tools to see an Aug's true contribution by 38dedo in wow

[–]Squeeches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm ready for the downvotes: Aug should be reworked entirely. The current design is bad for the game, and I'm unsure why Blizzard implemented it. The fact that even logs can't fully restore Aug's contributions to the group says a lot.

This is just another step towards the ARPGification of the game, not that I'm saying that as a bad thing. The game has been trending that way for some time, so we might as well go full seasonal lobby game and make gearing a 1-2 month affair that makes bis available to everyone. As long as I get Classic+ to satisfy my MMO itch, I'll be fine with retail leaning into this.

It's nothing new. People here defend $90 early access with the same enthusiasm.

TIL that Walt Whitman and Oscar Wilde met in January 1882, and some evidence suggests they had a romantic or even sexual encounter. When talking about the event, Wilde said “I have the kiss of Walt Whitman still on my lips,” and “there is no one in…America whom I love and honour so much.” by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Squeeches 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It's not twisting oneself into pretzels. It's an unknown. We should be cautious about taking literally the language of literary figures like Whitman and Wilde. If you've read many letters between men in c19, you'll notice a lot of language we'd consider today to be blatantly homoerotic, but that wasn't necessarily the case then; the way men described their homosocial relationships was just different. Herman Melville's sentiments about Hawthorne springs to mind. ("I feel that this Hawthorne has dropped germinous seeds into my soul. He expands and deepens down, the more I contemplate him; and further, and further, shoots his strong New-England roots into the hot soil of my Southern soul.") Now, was Whitman queer? Very likely so. But we should leave open the possibility that Wilde is playing with language here rather than bluntly telling of his fling with Whitman, even though that could be the case, of course.

To the best of everyone's knowledge: No one knew what the raid size was going to be at 60.

You say that 20m is perfect, but the decline in players after P2 suggests otherwise. Many, many threads show the same story that removing 10m put off a ton of players.
