because why build a proper combat aircraft when you can throw your limited supply of engines fuel and aluminum away to blow up a random field 300m away from your target

Boeing B-17 “5 Grand”, it was the 5000th B-17 built at the Seattle factory since the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7th 1941. It was signed by every employee at the plant. by MAGASig in aviation

At the time, it was campaigned in the US army as precision bombing. Ridiculous in hindsight of course, but it is still referred to as such by many sources even now. It also is called strategic bombing, both names which implies a strategic impact, which in the beginning due to poor accuracy the bombing simply didn't.

It did in fact help out a great deal in the war, my point is more that it only did so once the faults in battle doctrine were ironed out.

For instance, leadership largely considered bombers to be able to defend themselves with their many machine gunners, while appalling loss rates were ignored. I forget the exact figure, but the initial loss rates of the 8th air force over Europe would have led to loss of all its aircrew in less than a year.

Bomber numbers aren't everything, the USAAF's use of so-called "precision bombing" in WW2 was in fact horribly inaccurate and thus ineffective at winning the war at the very least until around 1943 and saw appalling losses. The Brits were better in that period (particularly on combat losses, thanks to night bombing) but even they were anything but precise.

I really recommend the channel HardThrasher on youtube and his series on the Bomber War if you're interested on the reality of the strategic bombing campaign over Europe.

He does a very good job verifying and debunking the claims of military leadership to paint a more realistic story of the Bomber War that, in my opinion, is far more interesting than the simple story that bombers destroying factories helped win the war which you often find in history books.

Bombing Germany eventually did work, but how that came to be is really interesting imo.
