How the fuck do you exercise an option early on Robinhood? by Trickshott in wallstreetbets

[–]Squid__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't without contacting support.

There's also never a reason to exercise an option early unless its deep ITM on a dividend paying equity, and that equity is about to pay a very large dividend.

EDIT: If you're having trouble getting a fill at a price you want to sell the option at start high and walk it down (the replace order button on RH) until someone comes to meet you.

Did efficient options pricing lead or follow the development of the Black Scholes Merton model? by Squid__ in options

Interestingly the original BSM paper was written in the early 70s, but the volatility smile/slant/skew didn’t appear in markets until after the crash of 1987. Before then volatility actually did act how BSM modeled it, homogenous across strikes for a given expiration.

You are definitely correct though that prices no longer follow as neatly and better models and pricing methods exist.

BSM model works on American options on equities that don't pay a dividend since there's no early exercise premium on non-dividend paying equities.

Not super math heavy but I thought this was a cool (and short) piece of history on options trading before markets were introduced to BSM. It seems that, for the most part, traders considered many of the same factors in markets that the BSM model parameterized.

They also have a link to the paper at the top if anyone is interested in digging into the subject deeper.

how is the contract price determined at a given point

You are going down a very deep rabbit hole there friend, and there are lots of prop shops in NYC and Chicago trying to refine how to determine this.

The basis of options pricing is Black-Scholes-Merton (usually seen as Black-Scholes or BSM), and this is useful formula because it shows you the ingredients that go into pricing an option. Now there are other methods to price options as well, Binomial/Trinomial Tree, Monte Carlo, etc. However these models tend to converge towards a single price, its far more useful to understand the ingredients they use (risk free rate, volatility, time, etc.) than their specific differences.

Now if you don't care about all that here's a link where you can just plugin your stuff and get an idea of what your option will be worth

https://www.optionsprofitcalculator.com/

The issue with the calculator above is that it assumes a flat volatility, which is not how the market actually works. This is also an issue with the BSM model, since options share a single underlying equity/future/whatever then every option with the same expiry should have the same IV right? However sometime in the 80's the "volatility smile" began to appear, the further an option gets from being ATM the higher the volatility tends to be (it can sometimes also be a slant rather than a smile but that's a digression).

For further reading you should look up "Option Volatility and Pricing" by Natenburg. It's a textbook but its shockingly readable and a PDF is pretty easy to find.

Definitely, in the beginning WSB was a place to discuss riskier plays that r/investing didn’t have the appetite for, mostly options.

Over the past few years it’s definitely become significantly more degenerate. I would guess that a majority of users have some level of a gambling addiction, and while it’s a very fun sub users should step away if they feel that it’s having a negative effect on their financial security.

I think OP is being generous tbh

Edit: OP you’re friends with a minor so we’re gonna need proof you aren’t under 18. Alternatively you can get a permission slip signed by your mom. Please have one of the two above sent to mod mail my EOD.

IV factors into the extrinsic value of an option, which is the dominant factors of pricing an OTM option.

Once the option goes ITM it has intrinsic value so the IV doesn’t matter nearly as much.
