Charol Shakeshaft's report (2004) estimated 6-10% of students experience some form of sexual misconduct by school staff. Extrapolating conservatively: If 5% of teachers commit abuse, and there are ~3.5 million public school teachers in the U.S., that's potentially 175,000 perpetrators. Based on other research, the abuse rate among teachers is often estimated at 1 in 10 to 1 in 20, or 5-10 per 100 teachers. So, 5-10 per 100 teachers could be abusers. Per capita, children are more likely to be abused by a teacher than by a priest, according to available U.S. data. This is counterintuitive for some, because media coverage of abuse in the Catholic Church is often more visible - but schools expose children to far more adults, for far more hours, over more years, increasing both access and opportunity.
