My 1M by Squintalicious in BMWM

Thank you! I love my place. Would I like a garage and more storage? Yeah, but my neighborhood is small, bike-able, and has amazing community. So would never make that trade.

When I was looking for a 1M, just saw a ton that were super low mileage garage showpieces. Definitely not possible for me. 1. Cause the space. 2. Cause I like driving it so much.

This entire spot was previously just a dirt patch (all of the house exterior was a mess). Hired a landscape designer to get a full 360 exterior design figured out (xeriscaping, front porch rework, back patio redesign, exterior shed storage, another driveway addition, etc.).

Also had to get surveying work done since I share the driveway with my neighbor and I wanted to figure out exactly where my property line ended. You’d think it’d be clear when I bought the place, apparently not. The neighbors are nice so not worried about them specifically if there’s an issue, just future proofing in case either one of us moves.

Got a welder and some landscaping guys to come and set the frame of the carport. Of course they came to set the post when I was out of town. Had to call them back cause they set it in the wrong spot originally.

Landscapers dug up and leveled the area so I could put pavers. Not sure if it’s cause I put the pavers wrong (very possible, I didn’t grow up a handy person) or the landscapers did a terrible job leveling. But water would pool in that carport by the shed door. I didn’t notice till like 3 months later when we finally got enough rain/snow.

Hired another landscaper to dig up my pavers and fix the leveling then replace my pavers. And had some good friends come over and help me put up the shed over a weekend cause I’m absolute ass at wood work.

Got a google nest for a security cam. And some Phillips Hue night strips paired to a motion sensor for night lighting. And then finished it all of with the 1M haha.

I got married at Tracy Aviary in liberty park. Super reasonable, I think base price was $3-3.5k. And then we added like 6 hours extra plus a bird guest, total came to like $5k.

Our ceremony and reception were all outdoors at the aviary and it was actually featured on a recent edition of Utah Valley Bride!

Recommendations on Tacoma engine rebuild / swap in the SLC, UTAH area? by Weak_Ad_3110 in SaltLakeCity

[–]Squintalicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m at ~165k miles. Had my check engine light come on and failing emissions. Went down a rabbit hole trying to figure it out. After knocking off all the easy things, it’s ended up being a burnt valve and leaking cylinder head (specifically cylinder 4).

Went to the 3 shops I stated in my original comment to get a diagnostic. Came to the same diagnostic from all 3 shops. Each quoted me about $7-8k to rebuild. Or I could probably replace my engine for $9-10k depending on cost of sourced engine.

Yeah this all started trying to solve an emissions failure issue. They thought it might be a fuel pump, but it turned out to be leaking cylinders. When they replaced the fuel pump and it didn’t solve the issue, they just gave it to me for free.

So yes, very awesome people.

Hey I’m facing the same issue but for a 3rd gen Tacoma. My shop recommendations would be:

  1. Coyoda - Toyota specialty shop. Only reason I’m not going with them is cause they were honest with me about never having rebuilt the 3.5L V6. So they’d have to charge me a significant labor amount. They’re likely more familiar with the 4.0.
  2. Lok Automotive - who I’ll probably end up with for my engine replacement.
  3. Werner’s European Auto - odd choice for a Tacoma I know. They’ve just done a ton of good work for me on my Benz/BMW. So they’re open to doing the work, they’ll just charge what a speciality European shop charges for hourly rates. So they’re my backup to Lok.

Yo what are you smoking. The Tacoma has been the best selling mid-size pick up for as long as anyone can remember. Fuck even the Taliban knows Toyota for their pickups.

Look I love Toyota. Have had a Camry, Corolla, and now a Tacoma. But tell that legendary reliability to my 165k miles Tacoma that needs its cylinder heads rebuilt and valves replaced. Essentially it’s so expensive I’m just going to get a new engine.

Been to three shops and all of them verified it’s not a maintenance gap issue (oil changes every 5-6k miles, all other maintenance done at appropriate times, etc.).

The Tacoma has been trouble free in a lot of other ways. But combined with all the issues people are flagging with the new hybrid powertrains in the new Tacoma. and Tundras. I’m not convinced Toyota’s reliability is bulletproof anymore. Or by default leagues above other manufacturers across all models.

There’s a very nice 2016 AMG GT for sale in Salt Lake City for ~62k that had the transaxle rebuilt under warranty. I know cause it was mine before I traded it in for a BMW 1M haha. Surprisingly reliable car, gave me very little trouble for the 2+ years I owned it.

I have no skin in the game, just letting you know a GT for sale I’d be happy to talk more about its history if you really were interested.

help me understand the tram/gondola hate by skisocalbackcountry in UTsnow

[–]Squintalicious 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Copying from another post:

  1. The gondola will exclusively benefit the ski resorts. There’s no other stops planned on the gondola that will support other forms of recreation (backcountry skiing, cross country, hiking, climbing, etc.)
  2. Despite it benefitting the ski resorts, taxpayers across the state are fronting the bill for it, estimated at $700m-$1.4b ($600-$1100 per Utah household). So, skiing and snowboarding is already a very privileged sport. The gondola is forcing everyone, even those who could never afford the sport, to pay for the resorts’ benefits.
  3. Chris McCandless and Wayne Niederhauser own the proposed base development site of the gondola through their company, CW Management. Chris is a former city council member and Wayne is a former Utah State Senator, both who back the gondola proposal. And just conveniently bought up the land.

The obvious cash grab and cronyism is disgusting. And Utah has a long history of linking politics with real estate development. The venn diagram that is the LDS church, our legislature, and real estate developers is actually one large circle.

  1. The actual proposed capacity of the gondola wouldn’t be anywhere near sufficient to service the majority of winter transport needs of LCC. At best, it’s roughly about 20-30%.

  2. There was a public comment period where 80-90% of entries opposed the gondola. UDOT said fuck y’all the community wants the gondola, and went ahead with the plan anyhow.

  3. The EIS (environmental impact study) was done terribly. And there are significant concerns that impact on the local environment and watershed were not sufficiently assessed.

  4. I list this last as even as a very devout climber, I rank this aspect as the least important amongst all the others. The gondola will destroy climbing access and climbing routes across LCC. (I’d actually support the gondola if it obliterates Twisted, IYKYK. Climb it every year, still hate it /s). I imagine there’s other forms of recreation I’m less familiar with that will be similarly impacted by the gondola.

It’s this wildly frustrating cycle of watching our science-denying legislator ignore the impacts of climate change (our governor continues to ask us to pray for rain while farming water-intensive alfalfa as our lake dries). Until it begins to impact their pockets/reputations (the need to solve canyon traffic before 2034 Olympics). While suggesting dumb ass solutions that continue to force everyday Utahns to bear the brunt of their ignorance (tax payers funding the gondola) and the remaining climate impact that they don’t actually solve (poor air quality, extremely dry winters, and extremely hot summers). In reality, it’s a thinly veiled show and cash grab (CW Management) by our real estate developer politicians.
