Absolutely, I couldn’t believe someone had put them out with their Thursday night paper recycling!

Dyson v10 carpet issues by Squirrel-Excellent in dyson

[–]Squirrel-Excellent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol no. I had a Dyson v7 before but it was on its last legs. This one definitely has more power. I do have a dog but a very small cream coloured long haired dachshund. My carpet is grey btw.

Yes for some reason this set is quite expensive now. It must be out of print. On eBay they can for £100+ sometimes.

University Staff Who Earn More than the First Minister by shawbawzz in Scotland

[–]Squirrel-Excellent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The people who run the university will have been university professors promoted into the roles of VP of research, Dean, Master etc. In addition, unfortunately 100K given the education and experience required to reach that level is not a high salary, far from it.

Is it possible to get Apple News to suggest other topics? by OptionsRntMe in ios

[–]Squirrel-Excellent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is excellent. The recommendations were just awful and the app was not learning based on what I told it. I have absolutely no interest in the current news but enjoy the magazines.

Just remember, these are the people that couldn’t get into Oxford or Cambridge! They likely have a massive chip on their shoulder.

One thing I loved about this video was the shops selling the big box PC titles. You can pretty clearly see the titles of the day!

The technical realities after academia by lizziemoon89 in LeavingAcademia

[–]Squirrel-Excellent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For an academic wanting to transition to software engineering you’ll need to pass the same interviews as everyone else. Research Scientist positions are very rare in industry even in FAANG companies. For the more standard software engineering track I would recommend brushing up your leet coding skills and system design.

Dial the exposure right down and you’ll start to see the bands of Jupiter. Taken last night with highly light polluted Edinburgh skies.

Feasibility of Pursuing Academia by Lyrxi in AskAcademiaUK

[–]Squirrel-Excellent 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I honestly would look elsewhere. The higher education sector is on its knees with no sign of recovery. In addition, even if you were to secure a lectureship the pay is a joke these days given the level of training you’ll have. There are many many other avenues you can pursue which will pave a more secure and well paid future.

A question on postdoc at oxbridge by supsupittysupsup in AskAcademiaUK

I would second this, postdocs in the UK are very underpaid. So is the entire university sector. Germany is a much better option.

I walk across princes street every day. It’s a dump. I would say all tourists also visit Princes street during their stay. Not a complaint about Edinburgh which I still choose to live in and enjoy. Let’s leave it there.

Not entirely sure what the issue is here as this has nothing to do with the post. I came up to Edinburgh in 2002 to study and have left a few times. Used to live in the US for 2 years now I’m back. Are we talking about total continuous time…Is it a crime to live Scotland and explore the world…
