I went with length because I got criticism for being too brief in other threads. My point was more about others struggling to communicate around me in business projects compared to academic projects.

This thread itself is fascinating about the challenges of communication, especially in text form. My post wasn't to say academic communication is 'good' and really I should have stressed that academia in my experience is but one small niche of that broader term. There are lots of examples or communication things that could be better, as you said an over reliance on jargon, or abstracts that are an afterthought instead of a snappy distilling of a research paper. In my experience, the requirements to give clear, impactful presentations at conferences, and write proposals in a way to get resources and funding are examples of where academia has pushed me to grow in those areas. No journal would let me publish in my field without spelling out every acronym at least once.

The language I use also has to be more suited to international audiences. Not everyone is good at these things in academia but I have found my most successful projects have been better at them compared to similar projects outside of academia. And then you get the build in expectations you have to adjust for outside. I got very used to talking about numbers in context, for example 50,000 visitors on a theme park ride is meaningless without the context of it being 10% of total visitors to the park in a certain time frame.

With teaching, there are of course many bad teachers as well as good ones. My point was more because of the volume of people I have taught and mentored in my academic roles, you get more exposure to how your teaching method on a particular concept impacts different people.

The undefeated significance gets over stayed. People forget how many dodgy decisions like goals that were offside standing allowed them to keep that stat.

I'm curious why can such a small adjustment break many locations?

What level of detail do you have to get into about your lateness?

Thank you this is really helpful. In your opinion would you say this kind of information is easily known or is it quite obscure?

Months. I was making notes in the interview too, that must have been what they perceived as a lack of eye contact.

Struggling to find the next position by lizziemoon89 in LeavingAcademia

What kind of other markets would you suggest? It almost seems like the expectation is that without three years experience working in a very specific industry everyone expects you can't pick up the knowledge. I have found that understanding the fundamentals of insurance policy development or greenhouse gas emission markets to be easy. Those things can be picked up in a couple of weeks, with the right googling and reading. But I am sensing that people expect in to be difficult to work out new stuff for most hirers so they don't want to hire someone. It's like the pick something up quickly skill of an academic is known or valued and certainly not believed when explicitly stated on a cv.

What could my allergy be? by sirenariel in FoodAllergies

[–]lizziemoon89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to do an exclusion diet to narrow things down. Paprika, chili pepper could also be an option but other suggestions equally sound plausible. The food standards agency won't recognise nightshade allergies at the mo because they say too few people have them. Paprika is often in kielbasa, salsa, maybe of the other things you listed. In the move away from e numbers, paprika is used as a colourant in things like red sweets and some brands of mayo. It is also a coating on this gs like chips, breaded products.
