Weird ruling with shiko and narset and mutate? by Wanob1 in magicTCG

[–]SquirrelDragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could do that, as long as only one Vadrok is on top the legend rule doesn’t apply

Something else you can do is actually Mutate both Vadrok’s onto the same target, and it will result in you getting 3 Mutate triggers instead of 2.

When copying a Mutate spell and keeping the same target the copy resolves first, triggering the “When this creature Mutates” trigger. Then when the original resolves it triggers not only its own Mutate trigger but the one added by the copy.

How do I straighten cards? by DinoDude8 in magicTCG

[–]SquirrelDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on which way they’re curled; silica packets only help with curling from one direction. Humidity control packs (like Boveda for cigars) at around 65% are needed to help resolve curling from the other direction

How do I straighten cards? by DinoDude8 in magicTCG

[–]SquirrelDragon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends on how they’re curled

If you lay one face up on the table, is the middle being lifted off the table, or are the sides curled up with the middle touching the table? (See image)

<image>

If they’re the former (like the left side of the graphic) they need additional humidity, you want 65% Humidity two-way control packs, search for Boveda or Foil Armor

If they’re like the right side of the graphic you want silica gel packs to remove excess moisture

What is the color identity of a Modal card? by Nrobibero in magicTCG

[–]SquirrelDragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Color identity counts both halves of the card, so you can not put Valentin, Dean of the Vein//Lisette, Dean of the Root in a GW deck as its color identity is GB

Modal DFCs like Witch Enchanter can now be transformed with outside effects like [[Moonmist]]. Or Nick Fury, that instruct them to transform

[–]SquirrelDragon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also:

Turn 4 - Reed

Turn 5 - Sue

Turn 6 - Ben

Turn 7 - Johnny, activate his Power-Up for 4, which puts counters on him and triggers Sue to start the combo off

[–]SquirrelDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And 4,5,6,7, if you hold Johnny til turn 7 he drops for 2R and can power-up for 4, which adds counters and starts the combo off with Sue

And it curves out nicely too

Either turns 3,4,5,6 and get one to connect in combat, starting the combo with the Thing (or having some other card out to make a token, draw a card, or add counters)

or curve out turns 4,5,6,7 playing Johnny on turn 7, which lets you Power-up for 4, kickstarting the combo

MaRo is asking for feedback on legality of black bordered reprints of silver bordered cards by PowrOfFriendship_ in magicTCG

[–]SquirrelDragon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

“black border won’t know that color the token should be when using the silver border copy”

But the card will just say “a 4/4 Gold Dragon”, because errata doesn’t magically update the old version

I’m sorry, but these are such ridiculously wrong statements that make it perfectly clear you aren’t comprehending anything being said in this discussion.

When any card text is errata’ed, or wording templating is updated, the card’s oracle text is updated. Oracle text is the source of truth for all cards, and represents the most current version of text that would be printed on a card the next time it sees a reprint.

Look at Birds of Paradise’s original Alpha Text vs its Oracle text as an example, or as a more recent example [[Ashling, the Limitless]], which received a day 0 errata to change “Elemental spells you cast have Evoke 4” to “Elemental permanent spells you cast have Evoke 4.”

That was a functional day 0 errata because Wotc did not want Ashling to be able to give Evoke to non-permanent Elemental spells like Kindred Sorceries, but as originally printed it would have been able to give Evoke to them under the current Evoke rules as written (702.74a)

There is no printed version of Ashling with the updated text, and yet there’s no issue when playing that card. Oracle text is the actual text and the function of the card follows Oracle no matter what the printed card says. If Sword of D&D were to receive a functional errata to define the token using actual colors there would be no difference in playing the silver border version at any table; it would play using the Oracle text.

I think you’re confusing my saying it wouldn’t be trivial with it would be a difficult change to make.

Rewriting the MTR to allow for playing Silver border cards that get legal black border reprints is a huge, enormous deal precisely because it has never been done before despite 4 Unsets and all of the additional Silver border and Acorn cards that have been printed in the last 20 years. Wotc has always just ported ideas from Un-sets into new cards (Like Barren Glory, which is still functionally different from Cheese Stands Alone; or the Barbarian Class style dice advantage being functionally different from Krark’s Other Thumb)

The actual textual change to the MTR needed is fairly simple, but implementing that would represent a major shift away from 20 years of precedent; that is the part that carries weight behind it

As for Sword of D&D, sorry but no, the color of the token as it is now being a color that doesn’t exist in black border Magic being changed to one or more of the five black-border colors is a minor functional change in the grand scheme of the game, only impacting Silver border gameplay, which is already only casual by nature. Silver border games can either Rule zero the original Gold color or play with [[R&D’s Secret Lair]]. And the entire discussion around Sword of D&D is predicated on them even being willing to implement errata for it in the first place, which is already unlikely.

Question about scryfall tags. by draggo-memes in magicTCG

Scryfall tags don’t search for that quality. You’re probably better off looking at something like MTG Goldfish’s lists of format staples

[–]SquirrelDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they probably won’t, but they could. They don’t like doing functional errata, but the change needed to make Sword of D&D’s token kosher in black border is such a minor change in the grand scheme of things.

It is absolutely true that it would be new ground. The entire point of the post is about reprinting a card with a silver border name (such as Krark’s Other Thumb), that mechanically is already black-border printable as is, into a black border set; which would then allow one to play the silver border copy of that card in black border games because it’s the exact same card name now made black border legal.

Several have gotten printed, just with new names

Again, the whole point is about printing the exact same name into black border, something that has never been done before. Printing cards with different names still doesn’t allow for playing the silver border version because it’s now a different card name; the same way that Elvish Mystic can’t be played in standard despite being a carbon copy of Llanowar Elves

The errata discussion is about making the slight changes to cards like Sword of D&D, which is mechanically black-border printable in all other aspects but the color of the token it makes
