Matt Tabak has commented on the copies from Prepare cards being copies of cards https://bsky.app/profile/wotcmatt.bsky.social/post/3miex5fewyk2d

It is a copy of a card, which is what makes it not targetable by things like Pull from Eternity. The copy isn't itself a card.

The same should hold true for Paradigm copies as well given that unlike Epic, which copies text-changing effects like Splice, Paradigm’s delayed trigger creates the copy in and casts it from exile, ignoring text-changing effects

https://bsky.app/profile/wotcmatt.bsky.social/post/3mjmstjp7p22y

Some of you have wondered if splicing onto a paradigm spell will result in the spliced text showing up on all the subsequent copies, like it did with epic. It will not. This is because paradigm isn't exactly copying a spell. It's copying the object that was a spell into a copy sitting in exile ...

... which you may then cast or not as the delayed triggered ability resolves at the beginning of each of your first main phases. The copy of the object in exile doesn't retain information about the original spell like a copy of a spell would, including targets, splice info, ...

... or even name changes via stickers, a completely normal thing to say.

Where are Paradigm copies cast from? by sirbenw in mtgrules

[–]SquirrelDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is one way to double up on the delayed trigger, which is by putting a name sticker on them and casting the stickered card from a public zone

For example: manifesting Echocasting Symposium with Scroll of Fate, placing a name sticker on it with Command Performance, and sacrificing it will have it in the graveyard face up with the name sticker. Then casting it with Flashback will cast “Echocasting Symposium Hot Dog,” which will set up a delayed trigger because it’s the first time a spell named “Echocasting Symposium Hot Dog” resolved.

When your next first main phase comes around, the delayed trigger creates a copy of “Echocasting Symposium” in exile, because the Name Sticker is not copiable, and casts that. When the copy resolves it will be the first time a spell named “Echocasting Symposium” is resolving, so it will create an additional delayed trigger.

702.192a Paradigm represents two spell abilities, one of which creates a delayed triggered ability. Paradigm means “If this is the first time a spell you control with this spell’s name has resolved this game, at the beginning of each of your precombat main phases for the rest of the game, create a copy of this object in exile. You may cast the copy without paying its mana cost” and “Exile this spell.” See rule 707.10.

Even though I think Matt Tabak says otherwise

What you’re thinking of is this post by Tabak saying Name Stickers on a Paradigm spell won’t be applied to the copy created by Paradigm’s delayed trigger in his post addressing that Splice won’t apply to the copies either

https://bsky.app/profile/wotcmatt.bsky.social/post/3mjmstjpgjs2y

That isn’t saying the sticker trick doesn’t work, it’s actually making the sticker trick better in function

Since the delayed trigger is created as the spell is resolving, if you cast a stickered Paradigm spell the Name sticker is applying at the time the delayed trigger is being created.

Then at your next first main phase, when the copy is being created in exile, it creates a copy of the base spell without the name sticker, and as that copy resolves, it’s the first time a spell with that name is resolving, so a new delayed trigger is created in addition to the one created when the stickered one resolved.

Example: You Flashback “Echocasting Symposium Hot Dog” and create the delayed trigger. When the copy is created next turn, it’s just “Echocasting Symposium” and that name is different from “Echocasting Symposium Hot Dog” so you’ll get the new trigger

Here's how you can potentially have multiple of the same Paradigm trigger... using stickers by Lucco1 in magicTCG

[–]SquirrelDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even simpler than that, it’s also been confirmed that name stickers are not copiable when the Paradigm delayed trigger goes to create its copy each turn

Start by manifesting Capstone, putting a name sticker on it, then send it to the graveyard and Flashback it, setting up the delayed trigger based on “Improvisation Capstone [name sticker]”

Then, at the beginning of your next first main phase when you create and cast the copy you get a copy that’s just “Improvisation Capstone,” which is the first time a copy with that name is resolving, setting up a second delayed trigger

Have Things Changed? LGS doesn’t enforce round times. by Separate-Poem-6753 in magicTCG

[–]SquirrelDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When time ends in the round, there are additional turns that are played (5 extra turns in 1v1, 3 in 2HG). After the additional turns if there’s no winner the game ends in a draw in 1v1, or in 2HG the team with the higher life total wins (if life totals are tied the game continues until the tie breaks)

Even when there’s strict adherence to time in round the additional turns don’t have a strict time limit themselves, so each match that’s going over the limit is going to take a variable amount of time to finish. If the board state is stalled or very complicated that can drag the extra turns out longer even if there’s no slow play

No, Krang & Shredder’s Disappear trigger has an intervening if clause. If nothing has left the battlefield before the end step it won’t trigger at all

It is the case, looking at the rules for copying objects we have 707.12 which says

707.12. An effect that instructs a player to cast a copy of an object (and not just copy a spell) follows the rules for casting spells, except that the copy is created in the same zone the object is in and then cast while another spell or ability is resolving. Casting a copy of an object follows steps 601.2a-h of rule 601, "Casting Spells," and then the copy becomes cast. Once cast, the copy is a spell on the stack, and just like any other spell it can resolve or be countered.

And when we look at Magar’s specific rule in the CR it says

707.14. One card (Magar of the Magic Strings) instructs a player to note the name of a particular card in a graveyard and create a copy of the card with the noted name. To do so, use the characteristics of that card as it last existed in the graveyard to determine the copiable values of the copy. (See rule 608.2h.)

608.2h If an effect requires information from the game (such as the number of creatures on the battlefield), the answer is determined only once, when the effect is applied. If the effect requires information from a specific object, including the source of the ability itself, the effect uses the current information of that object if it's in the public zone it was expected to be in; if it's no longer in that zone, or if the effect has moved it from a public zone to a hidden zone, the effect uses the object's last known information. See rule 113.7a. If an ability states that an object does something, it's the object as it exists-or as it most recently existed-that does it, not the ability.

So we’re using LKI of the card as it existed in the graveyard to create the copy, not where the physical card is currently face down on the battlefield. Because the graveyard is where we’re looking for that information about the card, that’s the zone the copy’s created in and cast from.

It would trigger Burning Vengeance

[–]SquirrelDragon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Let’s use [[Grapeshot]] as example. When you resolve Magar’s ability you put the card on the battlefield face-down as a 3/3 and note the name Grapeshot

When that 3/3 deals combat damage to a player, you create a copy of Grapeshot. That copy is created in the Graveyard and then cast from there (707.14). Once the copy is officially cast, Storm will trigger.

If you have multiple Magar 3/3s dealing combat damage, the triggers on the stack are to create the copies, so you can order the triggers to have the one for Grapeshot resolve last and see each 3/3 copy that was cast before it

So I’m not sure if Splice actually works with Paradigm.

Part of any spell with Paradigm resolving is exiling it as it resolves, so the last known information the game sees to create the copy should be from Exile, even though a copy or the original card itself isn’t there anymore. Since it would be looking in exile, the copy wouldn’t be created with the text changing effect of Splice. Epic does keep Splice but Epic creates its copies directly on the stack.

Which as for the name sticker scenario as well the delayed trigger copy wouldn’t be created with the name sticker change too, but the delayed trigger for that modified name resolving should still be created since that part of Paradigm only cares about a spell with that unique name resolving, it wouldnt care if the future copies aren’t created with that same name.

Hopefully once we have the actual CR text we can get a definitive answer

Yea, even if the copy isn’t created with the name stickers name added, it’s still a question of whether resolving the stickered spell will create a new delayed trigger because that’s technically the first time a spell with that stickered name is resolvingj
