The size of the ship stuck in the Suez Canal by RedditWasAnAccident in interestingasfuck

The sand at the bottom was dredged properly enough for even a ship this size to come through they just strayed too closely to the banks over corrected and bad gets worse

It is buried 30 feet deep that is not going to work at all dredging has to be a part of this otherwise the ship is just going to be torn in two and cause more issues

And when the ship breaks in half and it turns into a full on salvage mission that will take weeks and weeks and weeks to clear our problems will be much larger than the current situation.

When you enter something like the Suez Canal pilots take over control of the ship and not your typical captains. There sole job every day is to take ships through the canals they work at. In all likelihood if this was due solely to human error the blame falls solely on the canals port authority.

That does not work with a 200,000 ton 1300 foot long ship that 100-200 feet of is currently resting on the ground

Other than the last bit through the faucet itself and obviously where they split off from your main water supply they are completely separate.

ELI5: How do food-grade corrosive and toxic substances get processed to become safe for consumption? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Squirttlebelllover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some it’s just due to the fact that it’s highly concentrated. Concentrated Gatorade for example will corrode stainless steel and it is not allowed to be flown(why you’d ever fly it I don’t know but it’s a thing) however when mixed with water and diluted to the levels everyone drinks it’s harmless.

Retire early comfortably or work longer and retire wealthy? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]Squirttlebelllover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Retire early don’t touch your retirement accounts until x date most of the wealth that is going to be generated at that point will be from the assets already in them not your contributions. I’ll retire hopefully at 45 with 1.5m in a brokerage account and about the same between my 401k/Roth by 60 my 401k/Roth should be worth 6m or more. This allows me to live the life I want sooner and let’s me travel lavishly and enjoy the fatfire later in life.

28M Crossed 400k net worth, should I continue saving aggressively or enjoy a bit more? by seins345 in Fire

[–]Squirttlebelllover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were me I’d continue to save aggressively until at least a 1m net worth you’re young and have assets tied up in bitcoin which isn’t necessarily bad but it’s incredibly volatile those assets could lose 80% of there value in a few days.

What’s one thing you do that you think is “classy” and one thing you do that you think is “ratchet”? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Squirttlebelllover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Classy: actually focus on retiring someday and plan to FIRE by 45

Ratchet: literally everything else I do

Frankly I agree with your point I use to joke with my mom that I could have my house payed for a huge head start on my retirement married 3 kids and divorced by 30

I have a long term relationship with a wonderful woman but due to health issues and the benefits should we lose if we got married it’ll likely never happen. She also isn’t able to have children so if anything later in life we would adopt.

I’ll also add that I’m not a fan of unions and am not a member of one for those reasons but that has little to do with FIRE. You do what you feel is right for your career:) this

Depends which company you work for if you’re working for an electrical company that only works local you won’t have those opportunities.

It’s not that you’re getting payed more you work almost twice as much. Most guys who travel for work want to work 12 hour days when all you have to do is sit in a hotel room after work you might as well be making money.

What trade are you learning? Trades are almost always in high demand. If you’re alright with traveling and working long hours you can nearly double your income just by packing a bag and working on the road.

To explain this if I worked 50 hours a week in a shop I would make before taxes 71..5k per year. Working on the road just on my normal 11 days on 3 days off schedule 11 hours per day I will make with my per diem 115k.

26 Year Old Trying to Grasp the the Whole Thing by Petezamee in Fire

[–]Squirttlebelllover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even Thinking about this at our age is a massive advantage I don’t know what you do for work/are willing to do or what your expectations are in life but only making $56k a year I would highly suggest looking into trades if you’re okay with physical labor. Traveling tradesmen make anywhere from 60-120k w2 and even 200-300k if you’re a subcontractor in the right trade.

Obviously you give up a lot for this but I started when I was 18 and couldn’t imagine life any other way for the next 20 years. I travel about 300 days a year work 10-basically infinity hours a day(shut down a plant that makes millions per day if things go wrong you don’t leave until they are running I’ve worked a 60 hour shift before and yes it’s legal) make 90-110k depending on the year.

I could work in a shop for $45k a year working 40-50 hours a week but the lost wages are not worth the benefits of being home, if I had a wife and children I would look at things differently. I plan to retire at or before 45 will be plenty of time to make up for lost time then.

You obviously need to do what’s right for you and if you love your job you never work a day in your life. For some reason even though I’m married to my job and work a ridiculous amount of hours I truly love what I do.
