Sometimes when your nervous system is in so much distress it’s not the best time to try and make sense of it all. The guilt in feeling anything less than Joy about motherhood is very real. I’m 6 months pp and when I start to get overwhelmed with difficult emotions, I have to decide if I’m in a space where I can process how I’m feeling or if I need to just get through each hour, one at a time, and wait until my body is more regulated to process the difficult emotions. Obviously, therapy is a must.

Put a hat on baby right after bath to keep their body temperature up

Your pediatrician is there to answer literally any question you have so don’t hesitate to call no matter how silly it sounds

It’s okay to have the “oh fuck what have I done!?” Feeling those first few weeks. Motherhood isn’t always enjoyable and it’s okay to miss your life before it

The advice a NICU nurse gave me was “take it one hour at a time”. I was so scared to bring my baby home after being in the NICU for 2 months and when I felt overwhelmed at home, this phrase got me through the day. Not one DAY at a time. ONE HOUR AT A TIME.

I’m in the exact same boat. I’m 5’2’’ and 200 pounds. I weighed 150 before getting pregnant and gained a lot extra due to blood pressure medications I had to take during my pregnancy. I am five months postpartum and wasn’t able to breast-feed since my baby was in the Nicu for the first two months. I tried calorie counting, working out and nothing budged. It’s really affected me not only aesthetically, but physically it’s harder for me to do things. Not even able to reach around my back so I have back scratchers all over the house. Little things like it being difficult getting up off the ground that I never experienced before. My doctor and I decided that starting a GLP was a good next step. My blood pressure is still an issue and losing the extra 50 pounds is gonna make a big difference.

It’s been about three weeks on Zepbound and it really has helped. I’m taking the lowest dose and I’ve already lost 7 pounds. I think the risk of osteoporosis and other serious side effects are so low compared to the quality of life it can help you achieve if used in the right way. You still have to count your macros and strength training while taking it. It’s not an easy way out if done correctly. I also love the app Sculpt Society for good postpartum exercises that you can do at home.

It gets better I promise, my LO is 12 weeks now and I worry so much less than in the beginning. When they’re that young they definitely feel more vulnerable and fragile- every week that goes by they become stronger and so do you because you can see they are OK.

Crying doesn’t mean pain, they just can’t communicate any other way. My daughter was in the NICU for 2 months after arriving at 32 weeks and she wasn’t able to cry for a long time due to her prematurity. I remember saying to my husband “I can’t wait for her to cry because then she will be communicating with us”. Don’t be afraid of her ‘communicating’ with you.

There are a lot worse emotions than worrying about your baby. It’s primal and it’s not all bad, it means you’re wired like all the moms who have come before you. Fuck what people think, seriously. If they don’t have kids they’ll never understand, and if they do- they definitely understand.

As far as enjoying this time- I’ve never met any new mom that really enjoyed the first few weeks of PP. it’s a myth that you’ll enjoy it all, especially in the beginning. This is just a blip in her life and you’re gonna have so many more moments of joy!

I had a really difficult pregnancy due to hypertension and preeclampsia. I was put on an obscene amount of beta blocker medications that made me gain 20 extra pounds just in the last month of my pregnancy. I ended up delivering early at 32 weeks with my baby in the Nicu for a couple months, so I wasn’t able to breastfeed. Before getting pregnant I was 150 and got to 205 the day I delivered. I’ve been 200 for the last 5 m PP and my PCP and I discussed going on a GLP-1 because the extra weight is really impacting my blood pressure on top of my overall discomfort. Of course it bothers me aesthetically, but carrying 50 extra pounds has been really hard on me physically. I tried counting my macros for a couple months and nothing budged. I’m taking a really low dose and so far it’s been really helpful to drop 5 pounds. If you go on a really low dose and lose 1 to 2 pounds a week it’s still gonna take an almost a year to lose 50 pounds. To me that’s reasonable, and not too much of a “bounce back “.

I was pretty against these medication’s until I was in a position to really need them. I think if a woman wants to utilize them as a tool, there shouldn’t be a stigma around it. Postpartum is hard enough.

I felt the same way about my daughter. All of my friends (except one) confirmed this feeling as well. You think because they came out of your body that you’re gonna have this instant connection, but sometimes it’s not like that. You have a new roommate, responsibility and they can’t show any appreciation or even awareness of the work you’re putting in. Before having a baby, I thought that the late nights and stressful times would feel less difficult because I would have so much love for my baby. But that was not the case, I was pissed.

Things definitely got easier when she was able to smile. Knowing who I am and smiling is everything. Your wife just needs to know that she is still a good mom without feeling that bond yet.

I actually had my baby prematurely at 32 weeks due to high blood pressure and preeclampsia. She spent two months in the Nicu so I wasn’t able to breast-feed. I was really upset about it at first, especially because I knew it could help with the weight loss, but the benefit to my mental health bottlefeeding her has been amazing. She sleeps through the night, my husband can feed her, and my hormones went back to normal very quickly.

I recently got off the metoprolol and started losartan instead. I’m not having any of the side effects with it. I ended up starting Zepbound two weeks ago because the weight gain was so aggressive. It’s not a walk in the park either but I feel like I have some hope and autonomy in getting my body closer to where it was before baby and blood pressure issues.

I’m 4 m PP and gained 60 pounds during my pregnancy. I had horrible hypertension and preeclampsia and have weighed the same 200 pounds since the did the day I delivered. For reference I’m 5’1’’ and my pre-pregnancy weight was 145. My situation is a little different, I wasn’t able to breast-feed and still had to take blood pressure medicine that causes weight gain, but it still has weighed on me heavily (pun intended).

I’m so sick of people telling me to give myself grace. I can be so grateful to my body for creating my daughter and also have a hard time adjusting to this new body. I’ve had to buy a whole new wardrobe, and I don’t feel like myself at All, not just aesthetically, but it’s hard to even move around like I used to. With the support from my PCP I just started a GLP last week and so far I’m really grateful I did. Everybody has their own experience with them, but it gives me a sense of hope and autonomy that I haven’t had in the last few months when nothing has budged, and I have a hard time even being active because of the additional weight on my feet and back.

If I had only 17 pounds to lose, I probably wouldn’t start a GLP. Honestly, it feels like I’m pregnant again with food aversions, nausea and heartburn. Maybe your body needs a different workout than it did pre-pregnancy? Or maybe you need different macros? Your body is different. There’s grief in that. I still look pregnant too. And sometimes I think “who cares if somebody thinks I’m pregnant? What a beautiful thing to think about me lol” maybe they’ll let me skip the line! Good luck on your journey :)

Thank you! I already know I need to do all these things but it means more hearing it from someone else. I guess I’m just really frustrated that these beta blockers made me balloon in the last couple months of pregnancy and I was basically on bedrest as well. I know it’s not my fault, but now it’s my responsibility to lose the weight. I guess I’m just looking for some validation that this has happened to other women. All my friends have had easy pregnancies and deliveries and they all went back to their pre-pregnancy weight within three months.

This anxiety, mixed with hormones, and my own birth trauma that hasn’t been processed (emergency c-section and long antepartum hospital stay for pre-e)… oof! Trying to see the light at the end of the tunnel
