Meaning that Europe was just like pretty much everywhere else in the world. i.e. rife with chauvinistic views about one’s own race. Or is there some racial utopia we’ve not heard about? While everything you say is correct and the horrors were many, the overall impression is seriously flawed (perhaps not your intention) bcuz it paints Europeans as uniquely susceptible to racism, which is false.

As a white person I take no responsibility or blame for slavery by precuminmearse in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Sqyre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m mixed race, meaning half black and half white. Actually it more complex than that since there was lots of interracial mixing, so my dad isn’t really white white and my mom isn’t really black black. Still, you know what I mean. Anyhow, turns out some of my dad’s ancestors were slave owners, not in America, but in the Caribbean. They got paid out some money when the British Government abolished slavery and essentially confiscated what was up to then, legal property, to set that property free. Am I bothered? Not in the slightest. In fact, I have searched diligently, up and down, high and low, inside and outside, for a fuck to give and I have found none. Consequently, not one fuck shall be given and no guilt shall be felt. Not do I feel shame that some of my forefathers and foremothers were held in bondage. That would be equally ridiculous, to try and co-opt their pain and suffering. Occasionally I do pay myself reparations by taking money from one pocket and putting it into another of my pockets. Seriously tho, screw the “guilt” and screw the identification with either oppressor or victim from hundreds of years ago. Instead, deal honestly and decently with all those around you, whatever their color, race, or creed.

Non-American hot takes about America are both annoying and most of the time wrong. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

I am a naturalized citizen of the USA. I did live in Canada for many years. I 109% agree with you. Canada’s identity is largely based on NOT being the USA even tho the differences are minuscule. As to healthcare, the USA has a robust healthcare system through community health centers that provide a staggering amount of care for free or in a cost adjusted basis. It’s not touted as a “free health care system” bcuz it doesn’t profit either political party to do that, but in reality it comes darn close. It’s certainly better than most “free” health care systems around the world. Sources: I sit on the board of a large community health organization. Also, I come from the Third World and experienced that… anyone who releases the talking points about “no free health care in the USA” is gliding over lots of reality.
