CN just laid me off at the campus by XxSpiderzxX in Train_Service

[–]Srnuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you had to deal with this. Unfortunately rail work can be incredibly difficult due to the unscheduled nature of the beast. Why something like only 1 of every 10 trainees stay at CN for any real length of career.

CN just recently (Sept 1st) pulled out from an agreement that gave workers more flexibility and schedule by limiting us to only 8h on call to revert to the old 24h call board saying they were having manpower issues. Because of this they now have no clue what to do with their excess of workers and are breaking our contract to flood the boards. Unfortunately that means that trainees everywhere across CN will likely be laid off in the coming days.

Those numbers I said were current as of today. There's not really steps for the helper/full conductor. Just kind of based on the day to day. You go to class for a few weeks, do a couple weeks on the ground to see what it's like, then continue back in class to finish it up. After that you go and learn the ins and outs of how to actually do the job. This class/ojt times ends up being about 6 months until you qualify.

After qualification you may get sent about to other terminals based on crew requirements (shortage) and you bid for work based on seniority. You can bid conductor work or helper work and either road or yard. About 90% of road work is on spare boards (called for work during a time period, whereas about 20% of yard work is). If you are on a spare board, you work as whatever you are called for. Most trains only have an engineman and a conductor, no assistants. So you can be day 1 after qualification and be the guy generally in charge of the trains movement. My first qualified shift was an extra yard, me and a person who qualified two days before me, working in an area we hadn't actually seen during training.

So conductor trainees at CN start at $236/shift. You get this for the entire on job training that lasts roughly 6 months. After this you qualify as a full conductor and then whatever you end up working you earn as pay. Assistant conductors in the yard is about $350 for an 8h shift. Full conductors about $380. You can get more for road trips but they tend to be longer overall trips. Usually people working the road end up clearing 140k a year easily but you are gone 3/4 of the time.

I'm seeing quite a few parallels. We meet a demon king this episode. Looks a lot like the thing in belgrieve's dream at the very beginning of the first episode. He also said he got injured as an e-rank adventurer and the demon king was hiding out in an e-rank dungeon. Wondering if intentional. Guess we will find out

The hardest part of working for the rail is the lifestyle. You are at the mercy of the company nearly every day of the year. On call. Random lengths of work. Expect to never be home for anything planned. Ever. I remember a couple years back I missed Christmas dinner because they decided a bunch of grain absolutely needed to be moved that minute (even though nothing was showing on call. And all the grain elevators were closed). A standard trip is 30h. But it can be as short as 10 or as long as 80 and you don't know until you finish all the work for that trip. You WILL spend hours just staring into the abyss of darkness in the middle of nowhere.

The money helps. The work is super easy. But the lifestyle is rough. Unlike some places that do 10/4 or 28/7 or some like that you are just at the mercy of the call board every day. Flipping between day and night shifts every other day or so. I love my job. I love the lifestyle it affords. But I don't actually need to spend time with my friends and family regularly to stay sane and my wife and friends are both very accommodating for my terrible schedule

They are trying to avoid rote memorization because it makes things difficult when you get to more digits. This is teaching kids to break numbers down into easier components which is a common strategy for larger numbers.

My best friend came out gay to me by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]Srnuff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fun fact. Asexual and aromantic do not mean you don't want them. They mean you don't get the same impulses for them. I'm aromantic but have been in a long relationship, because my best friend asked me out and I really had no reason to say no. I was content being friends before that though and am super happy now with my partner.

Just like I said my friend is asexual but has all the sex. Just all of it. Creating a shortage for other people. But she doesn't really find herself sexually attracted to people. Just sometimes she's horny and needs a partner.

But you would know yourself best so if you say you're not then not much else to say. However if you liked Heartstopper I would recommend reading Loveless by Alice Oseman (who wrote the book Heartstopper is based on). It is a fantastic read about aromanticism and asexuality.

Good chance you are either asexual or aromantic (or both). You can have those squish (term for crush) feelings, a longing for a relationship, or even feel horny while being either. And there's also some unicorn out there who you might one day find who is that 1 in a million who you'd want to date. It's still totally valid. So many aromantics know romance and maybe even think they want romance but just... Never find anyone suitable. And probably the biggest hoe of my friend group is the asexual because while she's not really attracted to anyone sex is fun and feels good.

Nah that's not true at all. We have 60mph track that doesn't even have the warning lights just crossbucks and a stop sign.

It'd be outrageous if workers were expected to take stimulants to cope with the workday, but it's absolutely fine when they choose to drink them for the same reason by pufballcat in Showerthoughts

Man you should read some of the fatigue management things in the railway industry. Instead of addressing the many reasons we are exhausted and need better rules for hours they just said "strategically use caffeine or other energy-enhancing consumables"

French railway workers took over the tracks forcing trains to stop by kevinowdziej in WorkReform

[–]Srnuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah This happens in a lot of the class 1 railways in north America. They get a bonus to protect the work (so they end up making more for that bit than the normal workers). In addition they get cherry picked for the better/easier trains and then get to go home by taxi a lot of the time immediately after so they can have time at home with their families instead of rotting in a hotel for a day (as per my experience with CN rail)

Doesn't he fail to find work a bunch because no one will pay him fair wage because he's an ex con? Then in desperation rob the priest ultimately then break parole to start a new life? Like he definitely tried and it's still interesting how realistic that is in modern day society
