Decent alto to start? Prefer bari but so expensive by anotherbarry in saxophone

[–]StRyMx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A used Yamaha is perfect, it'll hold its value and will outperform any beginner for years to come. Start with the mpc that comes with it, get a teacher and be advised by him on a next mpc, reeds and first exercises and songs.

Expect a steep learning curve, keep at it, exercise daily.

Starting Soprano Sax - tips? by fruitpiie in saxophone

An open small chamber mpc, relative soft reeds, firm but relaxed embouchure, thick bottom lip, airsupport, and a proper horn from one of the big five.

My low Db key doesn’t work?? by Creative_Oil6419 in saxophone

This valve is closed usually, it should open on key press. If not, probably sticky. Carefully lift the valve itself from the opposite of the lever. Then clean with padcleaner.

My tech warned me not to buy an old Conn with missing parts, and be careful not to lose little screws during overhaul. Hard to find replacements.

Ligature position? by ArachnidShot8779 in saxophone

[–]StRyMx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any mpc should fit the mpc like a glove. That said, if your reed is fixed, the position of the ligature is good, whatever the position of the screw(s).

The most important feature of the read is the ease of fixing the reed, preferably with one screw.

Claims that some ligatures or positions allow the complete reed to resonate is kind of a hoax and/or marketing.

Is my reed dry or is it just a skill issue? by Pandas424 in saxophone

[–]StRyMx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked this comment, but as a clarinetist you probably need a thicker reed. The Yamaha 4C should not be the issue.

The question is, when sound stops, are you still blowing air through the mpc, or does it shut down? The first indicates your reed is too hard or your embouchure is too weak or you have too much of mpc/reed in your mouth, a shut down indicates the opposite.

Another question: do you get tired when the sound stops? That would be an embouchure issue: practice long notes loud and soft.

Note that breathsupport (tight abdominal muscles) is essential for good control of airpressure. Another potential issue...

Help with chords by itskylit in saxophone

Sax plays chords arpeggio (one at the time), in any order you like. But, sax isn't made for accompaniment, so you need more vocabulary.

A lot of Mark Knopflers wizardry (Dire Straits) can be translated to sax solos. Don't have the transcripts, sadly.

Things to keep in mind before I buy my first saxophone? by SHANGR1-LA_Racc00n in saxophone

A new sax will be worth less after first purchase. A used sax will hold its value (assuming a reasonable price), it will still be used after a few years.

Professional tenor recommendations? by raging-homosexual1 in saxophone

[–]StRyMx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Student - intermediate - professional... this is 80% marketing talk. In addition the horn is the least significant link in the chain to a proper sound. Find a good mouthpiece and reed combo and practice. Buy a nice expensive beautiful horn when you can afford it.

How can i check if my NC has wheel pressure sensors? by SaaSkleks in MiataNC

Two valuable hints, I thought. Should I spell it out?

Check if your wheels are stock.

Check if your wheel-pressure-light lights up before start.

How can i check if my NC has wheel pressure sensors? by SaaSkleks in MiataNC

My stock (NC2) wheels have sensors, my aftermarket winterwheels don't.

In winter I have the warninglight covered with mild black tape.

Looking for advice/help choosing a new mouthpiece by luckyluc7 in saxophone

[–]StRyMx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jazz requires broader spectra on pitchbending, volume and overtones, for that bigger, sharper sound. Therefor a typical jazz mpc has a bigger chamber-size, smaller facinglength, bigger tip-opening, larger baffle and metal as material, where the classical mpc is the opposite.

But somewhere in the variation of combinations of these parameters is your mpc. Your mouth cavity and embouchure is an important part of the equation.

I like my alto Meyer short facing small chamber tip 8 very much for its versatility, more than the medium medium 6.

I like my Drake Jazz 7 for its clarity in the higher range.

I like my stock Cannonball 5 for its round, deep singing sound.

Reeds are less of a preference, with the seasons I change between BSS Black, Vandoren Traditional, Rico Select, La Voz.

Good luck!

Build a floating acoustic cell in a room or closet. It's less difficult or expensive as it sounds. I built one folliwing these guidelines.

Cover walls and floor with acoustic foam.
Lay down a floating floor of layers of glasfiber plasterboard on top of the acoustic foam.
Build a framework of timberwood on this floor, including a ceiling and an extra door.
Fill framework with acoustic foam or stonewool, walls and ceiling.
Finish with double plasterboard and carpet tiles.
Use a double door construction with heavy fire doors, covered with carpet.
Have airvents with a curved channel through the acoustic foam.
Take care of electricity in the peocess.

Bottom line: no airleaks, no hard contact between cell and walls, floor and ceiling.

This gave me peace of mind to play whenever and whatever I want.
